The details 📝
Since we started frequenting Angelo's Seafood, we rarely order sashimi at Japanese restaurants. For us, Angelo's Seafood satisfies all our sashimi needs, at a much more competitive price point. Granted, by buying directly from a fishmonger, you aren't really chasing a dining experience, but rather top quality produce enjoyed in the comfort of your own home (though sashimi at a picnic doesn't sound bad).
Over the past year, we've gone to the Korean owned Angelo's Seafood in South Perth, nearly a dozen times and can't fault any of our visits. We usually order up a couple hours in advance for pickup. The sashimi offering varies on a day-to-day basis and is sliced freshly prior to pick-up. Be sure to bring a cooler bag with an icepack to keep it fresh for the ride home.
How it works at Angelo's Seafood is straight forward. You call up ahead of time, give them a sashimi budget and they slice the sashimi ahead of your pickup time.
For the two of us, we usually order $30 of sashimi which curbs our sashimi cravings. On other occasions, we've ordered $50 - $60 of sashimi to share with others.
Eating Ideas
Of course, you can eat the sashimi as is (the best way to enjoy fattier cuts of fish). Here are a couple other ways we've enjoyed our sashimi.
Make hand roll sushi (temaki)
Using sashimi from Angelo's Seafood, we occasionally have DIY hand roll sushi nights at home, which makes for an easy meal (all you'll have do to is slice the sashimi into strips and grab some ingredients). We love pairing it with some cucumber for texture and avocado*.
*We love the creamy, fattiness it adds. "Traditional"? No. Delicious? Yes.
Make poke bowls / chirashi / kaisen don
If you don't want the DIY and hands on approach to eating that hand roll sushi affords, poke / chirashi-don / kaisen-don might be a good idea. All of these feature some form of rice and sashimi.
Poke bowls are super popular right now and are essentially a more "fusiony" version of chirashi-don. If you're feeling a little lazier and want to skip the hassle of making sushi rice (used in poke and chirashi-don), call it day and make a kaisen-don instead (normal rice and sashimi).
Dressing up your sashimi
Or if you're feeling fancy, you can dress up the sashimi (a la Nobu style here). A quick Google should give you many ideas!
