The details 📝

Any Dining is a progressive take on Modern Australian cuisine which offer a chef's table experience and a la carte dining. Guests will find a number of Asian elements throughout the menu (bonito, kosho and beef tendon, to name a few). The culinary team is led by chef Josh Grey, formally of Rockpool, Print Hall and Tiny's.

📍 26 Queen St, Perth WA 6000

The venue itself is tucked quietly away on Queen Street. Follow the wall up the stairs and you'll find the entrance. Guests will immediately see the bar. A sliding door opens you to the Any's intimate dining room.

To start

The highlights for us were the grilled mushrooms and raw beef. The buckwheat in grilled mushrooms beautifully soaked up the egg yolk. The shaved slices of cauliflower were a strange sight on first glance - but added bite to the dish.

The raw beef served on rosti was probably one of the tastiest variations of beef tartare we've had - it was ever so slightly tart and the beef contrasted nicely against the crunchy potato.

🐽 Pigs cheek, white soy, fermented chilli & bonito $11/pc

During our first visit to Any Dining, we tried out the pigs cheek bao. The bao was reminiscent of char siew bao which can be found at dim sum. We enjoyed the flavours which were fun, funky (bonito flakes, anyone?) but familiar. However, we do think it's a bit steep at $11 a pop (a serve of 2-3 char siew bao go for around this price).

Mains

🦑 BBQ squid, pink pepper, squid ink pasta & chipotle $34

The squid ink pasta was simple yet delicious. The egg pasta was cooked al-dente and we could probably inhale a couple serves of the pasta.

🐟 Local fish (Coral Trout), yuzu, zucchini & fennel $40

The fish well cooked - but we'd probably not order it again.

🍖 Dry Aged Sirloin. Confit Garlic. Curried Egg. Beef Fat.

The dry age steak was cooked to perfection though a bit on the pricy end (we had a similarly sized dry aged sirloin at Nextdoor for $68). We paired it with a serve of potato.

Dessert

We finished up with dessert. Our favourite was the white chocolate dessert followed by the yuzu cheesecake. The white chocolate was simple but worked well and had nice textures. The same can be said for the yuzu cheesecake - which incorporated thinly shaved carrot which added a slice of texture (pun intended 😉).

The last dessert we ordered was the strawberry. It was a little underwhelming at the price point, so we wouldn't order it again.

We're generally not fans of dishes with "Asian elements". Most of the time we think it falls short in execution and doesn't do justice to the food (e.g. too many elements mixed into dishes for the sake of being "trendy"). Having said that, despite some dishes being priced a little higher, we enjoyed a number of dishes during our experience. Flavours were cleverly integrated and executed, and aligned to Any Dining's mission.

Simple yet complex dining.
