The details 📝
Artem Coffee has easily become one of our favourite cafes in Perth. Each visit is consistent - great food, coffee and some of the best customer service in Perth.
Founded in 2017 by Darren and Tracey, Artem had humble beginnings as a coffee cart serving coffees at markets and events throughout Perth, before opening their first pop-up cafe in Freo. Eventually, the pair opened up their flagship cafe in Mount Pleasant in 2019. In July 2021, they expanded north of the river, with their hole-in-a-wall coffee shop in Highgate.
We like to know the story behind names. The name "artem" has its roots in Greek mythology, being derived from Artemis, the Goddess of the Moon. The complimentary symbol to the Moon (feminine) is the Sun (masculine), symbolising Artem's two founders in their logo. Fitting and poetic if you ask us.
Our regular orders
Things at Artem is made in-house where possible - this includes their fermented chilli, their own roasted coffee beans (available for purchase) and even their smoked brisket.
This reflects some of Darren's culinary expertise - first starting in his family's Chinese restaurant (a rite of passage it seems!), then heading up the kitchen at the now defunct Classroom in North Perth, before finally moving to coffee roasting.
Aside from brunch food, Darren and the team have had the odd burger and beer night too.
When it comes to food at Artem, we visit exclusively on the weekends for one specific thing. Their reuben sandwich.
The beautifully in-house smoked brisket is juicy, pairing perfectly with the Swiss cheese, saukraut and pickles. A side of salt and vinegar crisps adds another layer of texture.
Paige's go-to at Artem is their prawn roll. The roll is saturated with umami elements such as tobiko (flying fish roe) and furikake (Japanese seasoning with toasted seaweed and sesame). The prawn tastes bright and fresh and creamy with the use of the roasted sesame mayo, complimented by the toasted brioche.
The both of us would happily eat many of Artem's reuben's or prawn rolls and are happy to order same thing, every visit.
