OCEAN & PADDOCK

πŸ“ 116 Middleton Rd, Middleton Beach WA 6330

From Aspen to Albany

Unassuming on the outside but ever so charming on the inside, Ocean & Paddock boasts award-winning fish and chips, winning the Great Australian Fish & Chip Award for Best Fish and Chips in WA for consecutive years from 2017 to 2019.

Ocean & Paddock began as a "fixer-upper", Β a business Trenton and Rebecca found on Gumtree while still working in the culinary scene in Aspen, Colorado. After making an offer on the business via remote inspection, the pair flew straight to Albany for a final inspection and took it over straight away.

The husband and wife team both boast impressive hospo CVs. Trenton spent multiple stints at various Hilton Hotels (Perth, Adelaide and Tokyo) and held the role as executive chef at resorts in The Great Barrier Reef. Rebecca trained at the Culinary Institute of America - the same place where the late Anthony Bourdain once trained.

Ocean & Paddock pride themselves in educating the local "Albanian" community on the importance of fresh, local and sustainable product. Meat is purchased from Spencer Park Butchers, produce from AVEG and fish from local suppliers, including Great Southern Seafood.

βš“οΈ Fisherman’s Basket $27 - 2x fish, 4x squid, 2x prawns, 1x chips

We ordered the fisherman's basket and opted for the Hapuka. We've heard lots of good things about their Nannygai so we'd suggest trying that out when available.

βš“οΈ Fisherman’s Basket $27 - 2x fish, 4x squid, 2x prawns, 1x chips
πŸ§€ Cauliflower Cheese Balls $12 - onion gravy dipping sauce

The cauliflower cheese balls are a must order. We didn't know what to expect, but we absolutely loved the smoky onion gravy dip!

πŸ‹ Shark Bay Lemon Pepper Crumbed Scallops $12 6pc

The scallops were lightly crumbed and were fresh, sweet and tender.

TIEN TIEN YOGHURT

πŸ“ Shop 48 , the Park Centre, 789 Albany Hwy, East Victoria Park WA 6101

Polarising no more

We were invited to check out Tien Tien Yoghurt by our fellow foodie friend Alex from @alexperthfoodie.

It was probably in late 2019 when we first saw yoghurt drinks while we were holidaying in Melbourne. Our first experience with yoghurt drinks was certainly a polarising one. We were put off by the acidic nature of the Greek yoghurt and hence, were a bit reluctant to try more yoghurt drinks.

However, we're delighted to say that Tien Tien Yoghurt has won us over and is potentially our new go-to "dessert" beverage of choice.

πŸ‰ Dragon Fruit Yogurt $6.9πŸ₯ Mango Yogurt $7.2🍦 Dusty Mango Lychee Yogurt $7.2🍚 Purple Rice Yogurt $6.5🍍 Durian Yogurt $9.9 (top to bottom, left to right)

Tien Tien's menu is divided up into fresh fruit yoghurt drinks and cereal yoghurt drinks, with some flavours including:

  • πŸ‡¬πŸ‡· Fresh yoghurt - apple, banana, berries, durian, lychee, papaya, etc.
  • πŸ₯£ Cereal yoghurt drinks - hojicha, matcha, oreo, biscoff, etc.

Our favourite was the refreshing dragon fruit yogurt. Our durian-loving-friend very much enjoyed the durian yoghurt drink which had generous amounts of durian - enough to smell the signature durian scent.
πŸ‰ Dragon Fruit Yogurt $6.9 & 🍚 Purple Rice Yogurt $6.5🍍

Once you've picked a flavour from the three dozen approximate drinks, we'd suggest getting purple rice as a topping. Purple rice has a slightly chewy and nutty flavour - reminiscent of brown rice.

Fun fact: the mouth is shaped like the character for "tien" which means sky in Chinese 🀯.

Love the cute bunny mascot.

SANCO JAPANESE CUISINE

πŸ“ 2/19 Douro Rd, South Fremantle WA 6162

Streets of south Freo

Sanco is a new, hidden gem off the main streets of Fremantle. Run by husband and wife team, Ken-san and Tomo-san, Sanco offers fresh sushi and other Japanese favourites, highlighting quality ingredients.

🎣 Premium Sashimi Platter $39.8

The beautifully decorated Sanco's premium sashimi platter differs slightly on a day to day basis, as it is dependent on what Ken-san is able to source.

🍣 Aburi Nigiri $22.8

Ken-san, comes from a lineage of sushi chefs in Kobe, Japan and has previously worked at the highly regarded James Parker in Northbridge. Hearing of this, it was a no brainer to try his nigiri.

🍜 Kamo Soba $18.8 - buckwheat noodle, duck broth, braised duck, spring onion

In addition to sashimi and sushi, the kamo soba (duck) is a must order.

Sanco is housed in an architecturally stunning and award-winning block of apartments on Duoro Road.

Sasnco's entrance immediately reminds us of Japan

Tomo-san tells us they spent over half a year fitting out the place. We love the greenery, decor and exposed concrete of Sanco, which reminded us of Japan.

Note Sanco offers a slightly smaller menu during lunch service. Sashimi, sushi and kamo soba are still available, in addition to various donburi (rice bowls) and kagozen (set meal of the day).

THE HUMBLE ONION

πŸ“ 100 St Georges Terrace, Perth WA 6000

An honourable mention

We've been fans of Chef Chris Howard when the Humble Onion was the name of his YouTube channel. The Humble Onion released informative videos related to food - sharpening your knives with whetstones, knife skills and more.

It was a joy to see The Humble Onion being brought to life as Chris's and Caitlin's own venture in the CBD. Chances are you've walked past it before.

Unfortunately it saddened us to hear that The Humble Onion decided to close their doors after Christmas 2021. Out of 150+ places we dined out at in 2021, this was definitely one of the most memorable meals we had. We visited with our friends @leenthefoodie.

πŸ™ Octopus + Leek Salad $26 - dried olive, potato, guanciale

The standout dish for us was the octopus and leek salad. We've never seen octopus sliced so delicately and it paired exceptionally well over chilled potatoes and was elevated by guanciale and dried olive.

πŸ„ Beef Carpaccio $20 - anchovy cream, crispy shallots, pecorino
πŸ₯” Pan Fried Gnocchi $28 - lamb bacon, pea, mint, nasturtium caper

We loved the gnocchi which was beautifully balanced by the punchy nasturtium capers cutting through the creaminess and lovely, fatty bacon.

Looking forward to seeing what Chris and Caitlin get up to next!
