If you're talking about banh mi in Perth, Bibra Lake Lunch Bar needs no introduction. They've got a cult following. Visit during lunch and you'll find lines out the door (and occasionally a little bit of a wait, but hey, that means the place must be good, right?).

Like many lunch bars, you'll find it tucked away in an industrial area (pro-tip: do also visit Eurostyle Smallgoods Butcher which is walking distance from Bibra Lake Lunch Bar - they've got some delicious sausage!). You'll find plenty of parking outside Bibra Lake Lunch Bar and a small seating area. Note, the place does fill up quickly during lunch hours.

In terms of banh mi, you'll find a dozen different variations. Aside from banh mi, the menu at Bibra Lake Lunch Bar's menu spans your typical lunch bar fare (sandwhiches, hot dogs, chips, etc.) with things even like smashed burgers and a number of Asian eats available too (rice dishes, and one of my favourite Vietnamese dishes, broken rice, being one of them).

On Saturdays, you'll find Bibra Lake Lunch Bar's roaring charcoal grill and the beautiful aromas associated with it. If you haven't already, do try some of their nem nuong - a savoury sweet Vietnamese grilled meatball, with a flavour profile kind of reminiscent of bak kwa.

Banh Mi

Over our six or so visits here, we've managed to sample around half of the banh mi. At time of writing, all banh mi are priced at $10 and you can get banh mi and Vietnamese iced coffee for the reasonable price of $15. The bread here runs a little on the crustier side and each banh mi has a decent helping of pate, mayo and green garnish.

Our favourite banh mi here are the:

Roasted pork belly

The roasted pork belly is full of delicious, crispy, fatty, roast pork belly goodness. This one's probably the most calorie dense banh mi they have. You can't ever really go wrong with a pork belly banh mi.

Traditional banh mi thit (BMT)

For me, this one hits home. Eating this evokes memories of eating banh mi as an after school snack growing up. This one's not as heavy as the roast pork belly banh mi. You can kind of call this "the Vietnamese conti roll". The roll is simple, and allows for all ingredients to speak for themselves.

Pork meatball

On the topic of "Italian" themed food, you could say this is like a Vietnamese meatball sub? 😅

Jokes aside, this one is perfect for those with a smaller appetite. Being even lighter on ingredients, this makes for a simple roll, which really allows all the garnish to shine.

Grilled chicken & nem nuong

We've grouped both of these together as they have a fairly similar flavour profile. Sweet savoury is how we'd describe the taste. If you've tried the pork belly and traditional banh mi, give the nem nuong one a try.

Lemongrass chilli beef

This one's pretty self explanatory - a lemongrassy beef with lots of chilli.
