Hey Chich!
CHICH is a small family run bar located in Osbourne Park. The word "chich" is the Macedonian word for uncle, and is used as a word of endearment for a close male family member of friend.
We had a lovely chat with "chich", or Ljupco (also known as Louis), who runs CHICH with his children Filip, who mans the pass, and Alek and Nina covering the front-of-house. This family run business offers some of the friendliest and warmest hospitality we've seen in Perth. We saw lots of regulars come in and strike up conversation with chich and his team!
According to Ljupco, the fit-out of CHICH is heavily inspired by the types of buildings you'd find Macedonia - where he hails from. Impressively, the majority of CHICH's fit-out and decor was done with the help of friends and family, rather than being outsourced to a contractor.
The original, plain, white venue underwent a massive renovation. Things like the seating booths, curved bar, neon sign and even the impressive lighting fixture, were all made with the help of his friends and family - adding to the the family run feeling of the place.
Before we visited, weren't really sure what to expect for a bar in Osbourne Park - given it's more of an industrial suburb if anything. We definitely didn't expect to be transported to such a moody and cosy bar!
Previous to CHICH, Ljupco and his family ran Red Chilli (now The Grill Shack), a small burger joint in North Perth which served up European style burgers. The idea of Red Chilli came naturally to Ljupco, having spent lots of time working for his parent's burger joint growing up. Eventually, there was an itch to run a larger venue and CHICH was born.
Eat
It was our first time trying out Macedonian cuisine. It definitely won't be our last time trying it! Being located in the Balkans, Macedonian cuisine shares lots of characteristics with other Balkan cuisines.
The menu is divided up into mains, which feature a number of Macedonian dishes, salads, sides, a cutely named kids menu "nephew's & nieces" and a burger menu. Macedonian influence is spread throughout the dishes and menu.
Our favourite during our visit was the selsko meso - which means "village meat" in Macedonian. The selsko meso is full of deliciously stewed meats, only made better by a tomatoey sauce, cheese and spring onions to garnish.
A side of grilled Turkish bread mops up all the cheesy, meaty and saucy ingredients. To cut through some of the cheese, there's also a generous side of pickled cabbage and a yellow chilli, should you dare.
The beef pleskavica was reminiscent of a slightly denser, hamburg steak. CHICH's "Balkan-Euro" pleskavica is a 50 year old, family recipe, originating from Skopje, the capital of Macedonia. The creamy mushroom sauce and cheese made for a comforting meal. We can only imagine how delicious the pleskavica patty would be in their beef burgers!
Drink
You'll find a number of local and Aussie brewers on the taps at CHICH. Their wine menu also features a number of Macedonian beers and wines too. CHICH also have their very own beer available on tap!
