The details ๐
De Honey Satay is 100% our favourite satay spot in Perth - so much so, it was one of our favourite eats in 2020.
Malaysian owners John and Sim opened their first De Honey store in 2020 in Cambridge Food Forum - the Spencer Village of the north. A year later, a second store opened in Gosnells which caters for the south of the river folk.
De Honey offers unique honey marinated satay which is then charcoal grilled (typically, satay is marinated with sugar which is more economical). John and Sim are beekeepers that own bee-houses, allowing them to achieve a rich, caramelised honey flavour on their satay at reasonable prices.
Each stick of satay has a healthy portion of charcoal grilled meat and much more generous than what you'd get home in Southeast Asia (or Malaysia, as Paige says).
A number of satay combos are available. For most, we think their mixed 5 stick combo should appease most appetites. Bigger appetites should opt for their jumbo mixed combo which comes with at least 6 satay sticks. We particularly enjoy the lamb and chicken combination.
Not a satay fan?
Not a fan of satay? De Honey's juicy and tender chicken Maryland is also grilled to perfection.
Otak otak is also available, which is a spiced fish cake which is wrapped in banana leaf then grilled on the flame. Although otak otak can taste fishy to some, De Honey's rendition is nicely spiced and smokey.
To finish off
To finish off, we suggest getting any of their tau foo fah which was refreshing and a just right level of sweetness. The tau foo fah helped to balance out the otherwise โheatyโ or โyeet hayโ nature of charcoal grilled satay (Google yeet hay for more info about the abstract Chinese medicine concept of โheatinessโ).
Note their tau foo fah is available on weekends only.
De Honey also offers a home-made non-alcoholic sparkling honey spritzer (available at both stores).
