About Kumo
If you're after fluffy souffle pancakes, Kumo is the place to go.
The concept behind Kumo has humble beginnings, originally starting off as a pop-up at the Sydney Night Markets in 2019 under the name Kumo Kumo. At the time of launch, the brothers behind the pancake concept, Richard and Jason Tan were only around 20 years old. The name "kumo" comes from the Japanese word, you guessed it - kumo (雲), which means cloud - a metaphor for the "cloud like", "fluffy" pancakes the concept specialises in.
The pair eventually moved to Perth in 2020 and opened the Kumo Kumo pop-up inside of Shimizu. Massive lines ensued on the weekend of the pop-up. We still remember lining up for over 30 minutes to get our pancakes!
Little did the Tan brothers know, that a month later they'd secure their permanent location to what today is known as Kumo. Just across the road in Washing Lane.
As of August 2021, the brothers sold the business. We'll keep you posted with what they get up to next.
Souffle Pancakes
You'll find around half a dozen different souffle pancakes on Kumo's menu, each suiting different flavour preferences.
One of the more interesting, slightly more unconventional flavour combinations is their baconana - a bacon and banana pancake.
In addition to the 7 or so pancakes permanently on the menu, Kumo have been known to do special, limited edition flavours like pandan and ube.
In late July 2022, pastry chef Amanda Yong (Tartes by Amanda and Cooee) held a birthday collab with Kumo. The team effort resulted in Amanda's very own black sesame flavoured pancake and drinks - named Moonlight Birthday. This celebrated the 1st birthday of her tarts range, Tartes by Amanda.
Drinks
At Kumo, you'll find a range of Asian inspired drinks and more. Everything ranging from Italian coffee, to a range of tea sourced from Teassential and even a selection of fruity cold drinks (think yuzu, lychee and cheese foam smoothies). How cute is some of the latte art though 🧸?!
