The details 📝
We were sad when we heard about the closing of 2020 Street Eats - a local Malaysian restaurant we frequented for the past couple of years. When we heard that 2020 Street Eats would become a dessert cafe, we were pretty interested. And we got even more interested upon hearing that the Silver Sushi team would be running it. The previous to 2020 Street Eats, the Silver Sushi team also ran Tori Tori - one of our favourite, budget friendly, Japanese restaurants.
Momo Dessert Cafe, as the name implies, is a dessert cafe. They also serve up a small lunchtime menu consisting of yoshoku udon (western style Japanese food) and a number of sando. At time of writing, this adds to the handful of Asian dessert cafes around the Murdoch area (Brown Spoon, Cake by Cake and Hello Hello Flower Cafe being some others).
Lunch
We'll be honest. We ended up going here two days in a row during their soft opening, so we could try all of their udon 😅. The food menu here is short and sweet.
Over the two visits, the unequivocal favourite was The Roe. We love creamy and we love mentaiko (cod roe). The udon was the perfect carbohydrate to soak up all the lovely, creamy sauce, egg yolk and grated cheese. Ikura (salmon roe) gave it an extra punch of saltiness. It also comes with sea grapes - something you don't come across too often.
In a close second place, was their truffle mushroom. You can't really go wrong with mushrooms, truffle sauce and cheese. It made for a creamy, umami blast.
The miso meatsauce in the meatsauce carbonara paired well with the raw yolk.
Be mindful of your shirt (a.k.a. don't wear white) when you eat the rose tiger prawn!
A number of sando are available on Momo Dessert Cafe's menu as well. For the price, they were very reasonably sized. Wedges can be had as a side for a couple more dollars.
Dinner
In August 2023, Momo Dessert Cafe started offering dinner service. Previously, the cafe only offered savoury food during lunch.
The stand-out dishes off their dinner menu were their bara chirashi - a beautifully plated chirashi bowl and the menchi katsu curry.
The colourful spread of sashimi makes for a very, visually appealing dish.
It's not common to see menchi katsu (mince katsu) on menus in Australia - so we knew we had to get it. Texturally, menchi katsu is a hybrid between a juicy Hamburg streak (or hamburger patty) and crunchy tonkatsu. The curry itself ran a little on the sweeter side.
Another less common item present on Momo Dessert Cafe's menu is their gyukatsu set. Gyukatsu is essentially a hybrid between a beef steak and tonkatsu - so you get two distinct textures. We did find it to be a little under seasoned by itself, but paired with the tonkatsu sauce, it was fine.
*Sets contain rice, miso soup, salad, pickles & kimchi
A number of other set meals, donburi, soba and udon are available. For more general Japanese dishes and sushi, we'd suggest checking out Silver Sushi, a couple doors down.
Drinks & dessert
We're super happy that we have an Asian style dessert place legitimately minutes away from our house. After sampling a couple of their shaved ice, croffle and Shibuya honey toast, we're confident that this place can compete with the bigger, better known Korean dessert cafes that you'll find in the city.
The drinks were passable for a soft opening. We would've prefered a stronger hojicha flavour in the iced hojicha latte, as it mostly tasted of milk and a little bit of sugar.
The black orange coffee tasted like a dark chocolate jaffa. Sweet and tasty is how we'd describe it, but we wouldn't have minded a punchier coffee flavour.
Our thoughts on the drinks aside, we enjoyed all of the food. Our only other criticism about Momo Dessert Cafe is they open until 9 pm on Friday and Saturday. We'd love to see it open to 9:30 pm or 10 pm. Though, playing devil's advocate, we can understand Southlands probably being a quieter area at night.
