The details 📝
Nextdoor 79 has quickly become one of our top picks for wine bars that REALLY know what they’re doing with their food.
Taking over Tipsy Monk Bar, Nextdoor opened in October 2021 and is owned by the Olsen family, who also owns Olsen Butchers next door (hence why Nextdoor is aptly named). The restaurant is run by Gavin Olsen while the kitchen is headed by Chef Ashleigh Pattison and her experienced team of Michelin and hatted chefs. With Olsen Butchers located in such close proximity, you can best believe that Nextdoor has the first choice in their finest seasonal cuts.
The restaurant is divided into three sections. On the left is a long hallway which serves as their formal dining space, in the center you'll find their informal bar space, while on the right is their fire-grill bar overlooking their open kitchen (where they also have their chef's table degustations on Fridays). They also have a large round table close to the entrance if you need to cater for a larger party.
With their heavily tinted windows, the restaurant is shrouded with mystery and appeal, and upon walking in, you'll find that the interior is sophisticated, moody and rustic.
We visited next door with two other friends and ordered everything to share, washing it all down with a delicious bottle of 2019 Marchand & Burch Morgon Gamay. Keep in mind that we visited Nextdoor a couple of months ago, so our photos may not reflect their current menu and offerings.
We started off with their milk bread which was as plump and fluffy as it looked - lightly sweetened and paired with a generous dollop of their ancho (a type of dried chilli pepper) citrus butter.
Their kingfish (seasonal) was fresh and complemented well with the creamy smoked sea buttermilk. It was however, served as a whole fillet - we would've preferred for the fish to be sliced or cubed which would make the flavours distribute more evenly and would be more conducive for sharing.
The scallops were our favourite entree - chilled, very sweet and fresh and we absolutely loved the sauce!
The charcoal empanadas were stuffed with perfectly seasoned and juicy minced lamb and was a one-bite delight.
The picanha (a cut of beef taken from the rump), was very tender despite being a more muscular cut, and was well seasoned - layered with thinly sliced artichoke.
The dry aged sirloin was the star of the show - cooked to a perfect medium rare with a juicy fat cap bordering each tender slice to give it an additional burst of savoury flavour. You can absolutely taste the dry aged quality of the steak, and it was so flavourful that we felt like we didn't really need the accompanying black garlic and béarnaise sauces. We’ve recently had dry aged steaks at other wine bars that were priced at a much higher price point, yet the sirloin at Nextdoor is just *chef’s kiss*.
The eggplant was not a favourite but was certainly interesting. The pickled white mushrooms are tart and make for a great palate cleanser.
The smoked sweetcorn was our favourite side - puréed sweetcorn that is perfectly creamed and served on top of decadent mashed potato. Side note - we absolutely love the adorable bowls that this dish (and the scallops) are served in!
We’re very excited to return at some point to try their highly-acclaimed chef’s table experience as well, as we've heard rave reviews from every friend who's tried it 🤩.
