You'll probably be hard pressed to find anything else like Peasants Paradice in Perth. Peasants Paradice is the result of two hospitality veterans in the WA Perth scene. You'll find Dwight Alexander of Zimbabwe-Portuguese descent manning front-of-house while Justin West, of Burmese-Indian descent, is in charge of the kitchen. The result? Food that reflects their collective multicultural backgrounds and heritage.
We also love the philosophy behind Peasants Paradice. The venue serves a greater purpose of creating awareness around the socio-economic issues affecting Perth. A percentage of sales are donated to Homeless Healthcare from their monthly events and what is left food wise is donated to OzHarvest, a food rescue organisation.
As implied by the pair's background, food here runs Afro-Asian-Indian. Our favourite dish of the night was the braised oxtail curry puffs - a nod to Dwight's childhood in Zimbabwe, eating less appreciated ingredients like tripe, intestines, caterpillar and oxtail. And, a nod to the idea of "peasant food" - the multi-cultural mix of cheaper cuts of meat and produce that is looked over, with some dishes having their heritage stamped on them. The crispy, puff pastry nature of the oxtail curry puffs was a delight to devour.
Dishes here run on the generous side and value for money is a part of their ethos. We got a "just right" amount of food, with Dwight suggesting that the four dishes would be plenty for two (we're looking forward to trying the pork liver tortellini next time).
Before mains - their boerewors Philly cheese pocket. Boerewors is a type of sausage which originated in South Africa and comes from the word boer "farmer" and wors (sausage).
For mains - a red chimmi churri flank steak. We loved the crushed potato and broccolini (which also included the stems).
Our first visit to Peasants Paradice won't be our last - Β with service from Dwight being some of the warmest and hospitable in Perth and a truely unique fusion cuisine. In addition to their a-la-carte service, expect to find a number of events ranging from African curry nights, collab nights with other Perth chefs and non-for-profit lunches, with proceeds going to Homeless Health Care.
