In mid May 2023, Ria Ayam Penyet opened it's doors in Vic Park. Ria Ayam Penyet is an Indonesian eatery, with roots tracing back to 1998 in Indonesia. The brand has since expanded rapidly in Asia, with outlets across Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Australia and in the not too distant future, Amsterdam.
Brandworks did some cool work with the Ria Ayam Penyet brand, be sure to check out the case study here.
Over our two visits in a week, our favourites so far have been the ayam penyet, iga bakar and sate ayam.
With a name like Ria Ayam Penyet, you'd be silly not to get the "ayam penyet" (literally flattened or squeezed chicken, in Indonesian), arguably Ria Ayam Penyet's signature dish. Expect a delicious crispy fried chicken.
A number of their penyet (flattened) and geprek (smashed) dishes come with sides of tofu, tempeh (Indonesian soybean food, similar to tofu) and some punchy sambal.
Their iga bakar was juicy, caramalised and sticky sweet.
Like the iga bakar, the sate ayam ran savoury sweet and was slathered in their homemade peanut sauce. It paired really well with the punchy sambal and helped to elevate the dish.
Soyo ayam was a nostalgic and hearty dish for Paige, reminding her of her years living in Indonesia.
The empal penyet ran a little on the drier side for us (think beef jerky-esque) and likely is something we wouldn't order again. It did go well with the soto ayam tumeric broth though.
