The details 📝

There have been various pop-ups at our favourite banana leaf rice joint, Anything La in East Vic Park which have come and go, but Uncle Eddie has by far been their longest lasting tenant - and it’s obvious why. Despite the name “Uncle Eddie”, the lone chef Eddie is only in his 30’s but still serves up dishes that are worthy of respect. Uncle Eddie has a petite menu of only a handful of dishes, but he does each dish so well that there’s typically a line forming outside Anything La on the nights that he works. Uncle Eddie cooks on top of working his regular day job to satisfy the masses looking to fulfil their nostalgic cravings.

🥚 Mee Goreng $16.4 - yellow noodle, prawn, bean sprouts, chives & duck egg (extra +$2.5)

Our go-to order at any Malaysian restaurant is usually char koay teow or mee goreng - both of which have a permanent fixture on Uncle Eddie's menu. Serving sizes at Uncle Eddie's are a bit on the petite side, so those with bigger appetites should order two dishes. Being a bigger eater (I don't think we need to mention who's writing this article), I ordered both.

The mee goreng tasted authentic and evoked nostalgic memories of Paige eating mee goreng at the roadside hawkers in polluted yet bustling Malaysia. The noodles contain the perfect level of "wok-hei" and if you require a bit more protein, you can add duck egg (that yummy fat!) to your noodles for an extra $2.5, providing an element of richness to the dish.

🔥 Char Koay Teow $13.9 - flat rice noodle, prawn, bean sprouts, chives & egg

The CKT, although filled with a decent number of prawns was less enjoyable for us as it was on the wetter side. If you asked us to pick between the mee goreng and the CKT, we’d 100% pick the mee goreng because we love the consistency and dryness of their yellow noodles compared to the rice noodles used for the CKT, which are more on the moist side. Both dishes do run a bit on the spicier side, so best ask for less spice or order something like their delicious teh tarik.

🇲🇾 Penang White Curry Noodle Soup $14.9 - yellow noodle & rice noodle, prawn, fish balls, tofu, bean sprouts & boiled egg

The White Curry Noodles tasted creamy and authentic, and the sambal is served on the side so you can adjust your broth to the perfect spice level.

Uncle Eddie is typically open from Monday to Wednesday evenings, closing a little later than most restaurants in Perth. As of May 2022, Uncle Eddie's open until 11:30 pm on Mondays, 10:30 pm on Tuesdays and 11:30 pm on Wednesdays. We'd suggest checking out their Facebook and Instagram page as they update their trading hours and Tuesday specials. On one of our visits, Uncle Eddie's did sell out early, so we'd recommend pre-ordering if you're planning on visiting later in the evening.

We’d absolutely recommend Uncle Eddie to any Malaysian living in Perth, or to anyone who misses authentic Malaysian cuisine!
