We hit up some new Japanese spots in Vic Park!
Last week we checked out some new Japanese additions to the Vic Park strip.
Nothing too exciting is planned for this week in terms of eats. We'll be checking out Ka-Ten, another katsu restaurant that is walking distance from Katzu Katzu and attempting to head back to Mama Mochi.

ββThe Best Thing We Ate βοΈ
Mama Mochi
Easily by far, the best thing we had this week was Mama Mochi's strawberry mochi ice-cream cup.
Mama Mochi is one of the few places in Perth where you can find mochi ice-cream (Delicioso in Vic Park also do mochi ice-cream which is on our eat list).
The store opened up earlier this year and tiny footprint aside, caters to crowds willing to wait, at times, over an hour. We've even heard it can get quite busy on normal weeknights too.
Our time from order to mochi in hand, was around an hour (note this was on a Friday night). Would we queue again? With friends as part of an outing, yes, but we'll realistically return once the hype dies down more.
Waiting aside, the mochi was worth it. We might be a little biased as we do personally know the folks behind Mama Mochi (who are the same lovely faces behind Boba Boba and Rodzilla), but having said that - it also sets our expectations high for what they deliver. And they delivered.
Paige enjoyed her strawberry mochi ice cream cup, while I settled for their mini matcha chubby.
The matcha ice-cream used was on point - good matcha flavour and a balanced sweetness. The chewy mochi skin and ice-cream contrasted nicely against the crunchy wafery shell.
Having said that, on my next visit, I'll probably grab one of their mochi ice cream, given you can get similar tasting monaka ice-cream from Japanese supermarkets or the ice-cream section of your local oriental supermarket.
We'll write an article on Mama Mochi. Once we get through our backlog of articles cough cough Japan part 2.
What We Ate π΄
Katzu Katzu
A stone throw away from Mama Mochi is Katzu Katzu - a katsu concept restaurant opened by Chef Sean Hong of Yuuma.
Like Mama Mochi, Katzu katzu is a new addition to the ever growing, Vic Park food strip. Although not as long as Mama Mochi, it did also command a wait (we probably spent around 15-20 minutes in line).
We enjoyed the crumb on the tonkatsu making each bite a fluffy and crispy experience. The unlimited rice and miso soup refills were welcome and reminiscent of tonkatsu restaurants in Japan (we'd love to see unlimited cabbage refills, or a cabbage top up).
Our cuts of tonkatsu ran more on the leaner side, so we did prefer our friend's chicken katsu given it seemed to have a higher fat content. Having said that, being a katsu specialty restaurant, it'd be great to see different cuts of tonkatsu like hire katsu (pork fillet, more expensive and leaner) and rosu katsu (pork roast, cheaper and fattier). Cost and logistically permitting of course.
Factoring in wait times for the line, would we come back? Probably not. Fresh bread crumbs aside, we feel like there's enough of a differentiating factor to visit just for katsu.
On that note, we're eagerly awaiting the return of their 5cm mega pork katsudon (a trending item in Japan) which will definitely pique our interest and command a revist.
DJ's Willagee Lunch Bar
Not much needs to be said about DJ's Willagee Lunch Bar's banh mi. Easily, one of our favourite banh mi.
It also pops against our Dulux Amazon Depths painted green wall, don't you think? π.
Costco
Ending our week of eats is a couple slices of pizza I enjoyed at Costco. Paige and I popped in after doing some suit looking at DFO (pro-tip: MJ Bale, Peter Jackson and probably a bunch of other menswear stores, have a bunch of sales at DFO).
Back to the pizza.
Shame Costco don't have their supreme pizza anymore, as that was probably the best (and most balanced) slice they offered! The cheese was good, but it just didn't hit as hard as their supreme pizza slices.
Flavours aside, cheap and yummy calories.
