β€Œβ€ŒThe Best Thing We Ate ⭐️

Tea Garden

The best thing we ate this week were the Cantonese style crispy noodles from Tea Garden (A.K.A. chicken chow mein) - our local for Malaysian Chinese food. Turns out they're actually opening up in Vic Park as well.

Cantonese Style Crispy Noodle (chicken) $13.5

I predictably got the crispy noodles. For this day and age, you get a fairly reasonable serving size for the price I must say.

Dry mee siam with lamb $16.5

Paige got the mee siam.

What We Ate 🍴

Swan Sushi

Swan Sushi operates in the spot once occupied by a long time favourite of ours, Kou Sushi, which closed abruptly earlier this year due to the owner's personal issues 😒 . Via the grapevine, we've heard that the folks next door that operate Chicken Lab, are now running Swan Sushi.

Swan Sushi's menu remains a close carbon copy to Kou Sushi.

The nasu dengaku (eggplant with miso) and prawn tempura were probably our favourite dishes of the evening.

For mains, we grabbed one of their sashimi bowls each. The bowls did run a little petite for our liking. It was hard to not make a comparison to Kou Sushi's serving sizes, which seemingly were a little more generous - especially when the menu is very, very similar. Either that, or I was very, very hungry πŸ˜….

Having said that, there was a reasonable amount of fresh sashimi packed inside the bowls.

We'll be talking more about Swan Sushi later this week, so stay tuned.

Delicioso Gelato

Black and white photo of lady wrapping ice-cream mochii

Over the past couple of weeks we've visited Mama Mochi twice to try out their ice-cream mochi offerings. In doing so, we've also mentioned Delicioso Gelato - an Asian inspired gelateria that quietly started offering mochi ice-cream late last year.

To read more about Delicioso Gelato, check out our article.

Half newsagent, half dessert store, Delicioso Gelato serves up gelato with an Asian twist (think pandan, durian, kaya toast, teh tarik and more!).

Cutting straight to the chase. We love the gelato at Delicioso Gelato. When it comes to ice-cream mochi, Mama Mochi takes the win. We did find their matcha ice-cream to have a stronger matcha flavour which vibes with our taste buds more.

From an eatability perspective, Delicioso's mochi skin was a little hard to break apart easily, which was feedback we passed to Tiff - the lovely owner of Delicioso. Tiff tells us she's been iterating on the thickness of the mochi skin. With the mochi skin being hard to break apart makes for a slightly difficult and messy eating experience compared to Mama Mochi.

On the upside, there are a couple dozen different gelato flavours which you can choose for your ice-cream mochi, so you're really spoilt for choice. It may be a little bit of a downside, as different gelato flavours have different melting rates which ultimately effect eatability and the overall user experience. Contrast this against Mama Mochi and their handful of flavours which likely have been optimised to work well with the mochi skin.*

At the end of the day - there's no right or wrong. Ultimately, if you're after your mochi fix and don't have upwards of 60 minutes to kill, then drop into Delicioso Gelato. If you have time to kill, then go to Mama Mochi.

*P.S. I actually had no intention on analysing this in such depth πŸ˜‚.

Slow Dough (gelato)

Dark chocolate & marmalade ice-cream $16.5 (500mL)

Finishing off we have.. more ice-cream..? πŸ˜‚

Readers of this newsletter will know we've been big fans of Slow Dough's sourdough pizzas. This time around, we decided to grab a tub of their locally made dark chocolate and marmalade ice-cream. Best of all - it's vegan and gluten free too!

Close up shot of ice-cream

This pretty much reminded us of a more.. (for lack of better word) artisanal version of Pietro Gelateria's vegan dark chocolate paired with their orange and ricotta ice-cream - a combo we love. The dark chocolate was rich and the oranges (from Perth hills) gave it the bougie vibe. We're fans! Looking forward to trying more flavours.

Their single scoops sell for $4.5, which is very reasonable too!
