β€Œβ€ŒThe Best Thing We Ate ⭐️

SIMPLE Italian Cucina Pizzeria

Black and white photo of restaurant exterior

Some friends of ours introduced us to SIMPLE Italian Cucina Pizzeria in Applecross last week. SIMPLE Italian operates where The Curry Leaf once was (R.I.P. Curry Leaf).

Spaghetti Lobster $42 - cooked in a light cherry tomato sauce, hint of chilli, Italian herbs, served with Β½ lobster (250g-300g)

We loved the food! It was confidence inspiring seeing the restaurant full of life on a Friday evening (contrasted against the quieter experience we had at Curry Leaf 😞).

The best thing we had was their lobster spaghetti, where the spaghetti was served properly al dente (they have signage informing guests of this) and it soaked up all the lovely lobster flavours. Simply a delicious dish showcasing the lobster.

Gnocchi 4 formaggi $32 - 4 cheese sauce, cracked black pepper topped with parmigiano and pistachios

I did like the plating of the gnocchi - probably cause it reminds me of Chef Evan from Hitomebore / Kukan Izayaka's plating. The gnocchi was our least favourite dish of the night probably cause it gave us more "mac and cheese" vibes texturally. It did make an excellent dip for our pizza crusts though (pizzas were great).

Overall, we loved the food and are looking forward to returning.

What We Ate 🍴

de Vina

The latest addition to the resurrected Tan's Food Court is de Vina - a Vietnamese eatery. You'll find a number of Vietnamese favourites on the menu including pho, com tam, bun bo hue and banh mi.

The roast pork in the roast pork banh mi was crispy crackle and a good balance of lean to fattiness. Bread on both rolls was as little different to what I've had, as it ran more on the soft and chewy side with a hint of sweetness (potentially due to it not being toasted). Kind of like a hybrid between a baguette and brioche bun.

Roast pork banh mi $10

I wouldn't hesitate to get banh mi from de Vina if I was inside of Tan's food court already as it's reasonably priced. Having said that, I think you might as well spend the extra couple of dollars and get banh mi from Phoever instead - as their portion sizes are larger.

Traditional banh mi $9

Two Hands Noodle Shop

Hand holding a bowl with noodles, BBQ pork, fried egg, fried anchovies and bok choy
Pan mian dry with fried egg (large) $14.9

Ending the week we have Two Hands Noodle Store - a place on regular-ish rotation.

Hand holding a bowl with noodles, BBQ pork, fried egg and bok choy
Sarawak kolo mee with fried egg (regular) $12.5

Paige and I dropped in at around 7:30 pm on Sunday and found the restaurant around 75% full still. We were a little worried that the kitchen might've closed already!

The food? Good as always.
