WEEKLY DIGEST 107 | 24 MAY 2024

Last week we checked out Chicho Gelato's newest store in Mount Lawley. More on that later. I also (finally) satisfied my burger craving by smashing down BurgerFreak's Nightmare.

At this stage, the only confirmed eat for this weekend is Kimbap Heaven and maybe a lazy banh mi at Phoever this Sunday. We'll see!

Late week we ate:

BurgerFreak
Hermanos en Cantina
Chicho Gelato
Slow Dough
Chu Bakery

BurgerFreak

The Nightmare $28 - smash patty, fried chicken, streaky bacon, smoked BBQ pork belly, double American cheese, onion rings, B&B pickles, caramelised onion cream cheese, freak’n burger sauce, Peggy Sue’s BBQ & Sriracha

If you've been reading these newsletters, then you'll know I've been craving this specific big boi burger from BurgerFreak, for some time now. And finally, last week I made my return to BurgerFreak!

They've also undergone a major renovation inside with some minor changes outside. The new signage and fit-out looks great, giving the place a nicer modern feeling. There's a big contrast when compared to the old school, lunch bar vibes it had previously. BurgerFreak is probably one of my favourite burger places in Perth - mostly cause they have a slightly more adventurous, experimental burger menu as well with not as commonly used burger proteins.

I'm feeling a bit lazy to jump back into Lightroom and edit some interior photos - so here are some unedited photos straight from the Ric0h GR IIIx with Adrien Sanguinetti's recipe.

What We Ate 🍴

Hermanos en Cantina

Gorgeous George $9.95 - slow cooked bandit Lamb, Mixed Leaves, Charred Cherry Tomatoes, Crumbled Feta Cheese

It's been a while since we've popped into Hermanos en Cantina. They actually have since opened another store in Fremantle called Gorgeous George - the name of their lamb tacos. Tacos here are fairly generous when it comes to ingredients.

Of the two tacos photographed (we also got the prawn taco of which the taco name escapes me), the Siniestro was the favourite. Execution of the Gorgeous George was fine, but we felt the flavours were a touch too salty for our tastes (don't get us wrong, we do love salty food).

SINIESTRO $9.25 - blackened fish, roasted corn, cotija cheese, cilantro, fresh avocado slice and a lime wedge on a fresh flour tortilla

Chicho Gelato (Mount Lawley)

Hand holding two ice-cream cones
Cappuccino & matcha raspberry almond

After dinner at Hermanos en Cantina, we walked down to Chicho Gelato. Mount Lawley now was a bunch more dessert options with Chicho now opening and Yochi having just opened their latest branch there too.

We loved the fit-out of this store. For more deets, check out Paige's post on Chicho Gelato over on Instagram. Thank you for the Studio Appetite and Chicho team for having us!

Slowdough Pizza

Top down shot of pizzas in cardboard trays

You probably know that we're big fans of Slowdough Pizza. Their sourdough base pizzas still taste great, even though they're around a 15 minute drive for us.

Our favourites are The Caveman and Mary's Lamb. Our friend got the Mr. Potato Head - a potato and pesto pizza which was delicious too!

Chu Bakery

Hand holding pastry tart
Yuzu tart $11.5 - sable tart with almond frangipane, yuzu marmalade, Valrhona yuzu inspiration creme chantilly & yuzu bubble crunch

Chu Bakery has been around for some time now. I only made my first visit last weekend (note lines still exist on the weekends)! Weather last weekend was great, making Hyde Park a great place to enjoy some of their delicious pastries with some friends.

Hand holding chocolate tart
Earl grey chocolate tart $9.8 - chocolate sable tart, earl grey caramel, Valrhona chocolate ganache, chocolate creme chantilly & Valrhona milk chocolate
