β€Œβ€ŒThe Best Thing We Ate ⭐️

Nieuw Ruin

The best thing we ate was probably the Goldband ballotine at Nieuw Ruin. Our friend, Chef Stefan heads up the kitchen there and he kindly sent a couple treats throughout the night. Thank you for the hospitality, chef! πŸ™‡β€β™‚οΈ

Top down shot of fish ballotine with flavoured oiled drizzled around it, topped with caviar and parsley
Goldband ballotine $56 - devilled crab butter, mussels & lobster oil

The devilled crab butter and lobster oil paired beautifully with the Goldband snapper. It also reminded us of Nobu's shiitake truffle butter as well. Flavours were delicate and allowed for the quality of the Goldband snapper to be showcased.

Top down shot of pate en croute with chilli pepper and a quinnell of mustard
Pate en croute $24 - pork belly, rabbit & hazelnut

I'm not usually a terrine person - probably cause of the soft textures, but I did quite enjoy the pate en croute! Most probably cause of the texture afforded by the the hazelnut and crust. It paired wonderfully with.. whatever the chilli pepper on the side was too.

Top down shot of terrine with jelly and jam on top
Duck & pork terrine $24 - porcini, pistachio & maderia jelly

What We Ate 🍴

Lalla Rookh

I'm lucky enough to work a role where I spend most of my time WFH. But last Thursday was different and involved me going out to the city. We had a team lunch and food is usually a good enough reason for me to trek out to the city 🀣 (ok, I had another errand in the city that I wanted to run as well).

Top down shot of calzone topped with basil and cheese
Mortadella & ricotta calzone, San martzono and pork sausage $39

Last time I dined at Lalla Rook probably was years ago in 2018 or 2019, during the early Pekopeko days. My lunch order was their Rookh's calzone and added pork sausage (+$9). At $39, the price is a little eye watering, so it's probably not a combo I'd order again. The calzone itself was fine, not bad at all, but not amazing. I may have food coma'd hard afterwards..

Malaysian Hawker

Top down shot of char kway teow
Fried keow teow $17

We had no idea what to eat on Friday night, so we trekked up to Cambridge International Food Court for some variety (A.K.A. Spencer Village of the north). Friday night's dinner was a three dish affair - where we started with Malaysian Hawker, then Oishii Japanese Food and ended with De Honey Satay.

A place we usually frequent here is Malaysian Hawker for their fried keow teow.

And wow. Google Reviews for this place were harsh. Paige and I have gotten the fried keow teow from Malaysian Hawker a handful of times. And we've enjoyed it every time. This time included. Good wok hei. Trust your tongue kids - not a random stranger on the internet (myself included πŸ€£πŸ˜…).

Oishii Japanese Food

Close up of grilled chicken skin skewers
6 skewer combination $15.8 - 2x chicken, 2x beef, 2x pork & Chicken skin skewer $1.5 each

A place my barber's recommended is Oishii Japanese Food for their skewers. Our favourite was their chicken skin skewers which were priced at $1.5 a pop and seemed pretty reasonable for the price. I probably would've preferred a slightly more sweet savoury tare on the skewers, but overall, the skewers weren't bad!

De Honey Satay

Last up we have De Honey Satay. Our friends here still grill up probably our favourite satay here in Perth!

Top down shot of grilled satay skewers with peanut sauce, chopped cucumber and red onion and compressed rice
2x chicken + 2x beef + 2x lamb $21.9

If you haven't been, we highly recommend you check out one of their branches (Morley, Floreat and Gosnells).

Read more about De Honey Satay in our article.

Our favourite satay spot in Perth serving honey marinated charcoal grilled Malaysian satay that’s also Halal certified.

Uncle Lam

Top down shot of com tam with grilled pork, egg loaf, egg, pickled vegetables, tomato, cucumber and rice
Special grilled pork with rice - grilled pork chop, fried egg, pork cake & broken rice $17

On Saturday, we were up NOR in Morley to visit my brother, @andyquanmusic who's just welcomed a new addition to his family πŸ‘Ά. Before dropping into visit, we swung by Uncle Lam.

Here's an old article on Uncle Lam!

Layerz Patisserie

Almond croissant $6

We also tried out Layerz Patisserie for the first time as well while at Coventry. Head over to Instagram to see Paige's writing on it. TL;DR, their almond croissant and matcha azuki croissants were yum! Photographed in our kitchen, with assistance from IKEA under cabinet LEDs πŸ‘Œ.

Katzu Katzu

Top down shot of pork katsu on a plate with cabbage salad on the side
Pork katsu setto $21

Rounding up the week we have tonkatsu from Katzu Katzu. Again - a friend and I were in Vic Park and had no idea what to eat. So we dropped by Katzu Katzu. I was also pretty curious to see if the katsu had changed since our first visit.

And change it did. I enjoyed my tonkatsu a lot more than our first visit here a couple months back. The tonkatsu itself had a nice balance of fat to leanness. If I had to nitpick, the tonkatsu was a cut a little thinner than I would've liked (usually pieces are a chonkier).

Given the better tonkatsu this time around, we'll definitely be back another time to check for consistency. I do also hope they bring back their mega thick tonkatsu too!

Alrighty, that's it for this week. 12:41 am. I usually let my writing "marinate" and so I'll do a final review the night after (so tonight) before scheduling this to send out at 5 pm on Friday.

Catch you next week!
