WEEKLY DIGEST 109 | 7 JUNE 2024
Perth's most underrated Japanese restaurant.
This week we're heading back to Sumiya Gin to try their set menu which our friends over at @openproject_studio raved about. We'll then drop by Kimbap Heaven on Saturday for lunch (looks like they took over what Mei's Noodles once occupied). Ending the week we'll be grabbing pizza from our local Woodpeckers.
The week gone by is probably the first ever week where I didn't touch my Sony a7iii (AKA my big camera) and got away shooting on my pocket sized Ricoh GR IIIx. I think I'm getting used to the 40mm focal length and using foreground elements to fill in negative space.
It was refreshing not having to lug my 2 kg+ camera bag around (as much as I'm used to it)!
Late week we ate:
Hitomebore
Fine China
Get Ya Fix
Chopsticks Viet Restaurant

ββThe Best Thing We Ate βοΈ
Hitomebore
I still maintain that Hitomebore is probably Perth's most underrated Japanese restaurant. Yes, we are biased as we've known Chef Evan and once worked with him before, but that also raises our standards on what to expect from him.
The best thing we ate was his fish nitsuke (simmered fish). It was as perfect dish for the cold and rainy weekend. It paired with hitomebore* rice beautifully.
*Hitomebore is a specific type of Japanese rice which (I find) is a little less stickier compared to koshihikari rice and has a bit more bite
Evan's truffle ramen features a lighter tonkotsu (pork bone) broth. For me, I found it a little hard to pick up on the truffle notes, but Paige found it truffe-y otherwise (I blame my long covid symptoms and somewhat muted tastebuds since). Admittedly it is a little pricier for a bowl of ramen, but hey, truffles aren't cheap.
You also must get the tendon (short for tempura donburi, not what you associate with πͺ), as that's their specialty.
What We Ate π΄
Fine China
Paige and I's families had dinner at Fine China earlier last week. The food was great! We'll be having our Chinese wedding banquet here later this year, so you'll be seeing Fine China again.
No costs on these dishes as we didn't foot the bill - though I'd assume market price on both dishes.
The lobster with yee mien and the fish two ways were the favourite dishes of the night. Lobster with yee mien being one of the OGs and most delicious Cantonese dishes commonly associated with celebrations.
The trout cooked two ways was executed well. I especially enjoyed the salt and chilli pepper and how it nicely contrasted against the relatively "plain' tasting stir fried trout. Can't wait to eat all this again, later this year!
Get Ya Fix
Check out Paige's post over on Instagram for more on Get Ya Fix. It was our first visit and it didn't disappoint. We actually wanted to visit a couple weeks back when we got Chu Bakery with some friends. I'm sure we'll be back!
Chopsticks Vietnamese
I once again return to Chopsticks for a specific dish - their shaking beef fried rice (though objectively, the weather was perfect for pho).
