WEEKLY DIGEST 113 | 5 JULY 2024
Crazy rich broth.
We visited 6 places last week, so you get to read my rantings on 6 places.
This weekend we're off to try a new KBBQ place - The Gogi Korean BBQ, in Yangebup. It looks promising! We're then off to run a couple errands around the city and surrounds on Saturday, so we'll see where we end up eating.
Late week we ate:
Dessert Garden
Katzu Katzu
Mama Mochi
Tea Garden
Silver Sushi
Thanh Dat
With the exception of Dessert Garden (Sony a7iii and Tamron 28-75mm f2.8), everything this week was shot on the Ricoh GR IIIx.

ββThe Best Thing We Ate βοΈ
Dessert Garden
Dessert Garden kindly invited us to check out their latest matcha strawberry creations last weekend. Thank you to Yvonne for her hospitality!
The best thing we had all week was their fresh strawberry matcha snow latte. Admittedly, the $14 price tag is on the steeper side.
Having said that - we think pricing is reasonable. Given it reflects the premium matcha powder, straight from Uji, Kyoto - a very famous matcha tea region (in fact, we actually went there earlier this year), that alone commands such premium price. Matcha powder aside, the strawberry syrup made from fresh strawberries likely isn't the cheapest to make as well.
They've also introduced a range of smaller milk ice desserts. They cost just as much as you'd pay for bingsu - but I generally find the shaved ice style desserts at Dessert Garden a lighter option, compared to bingsu.
Head over to Insta to read Paige's write-up on Dessert Garden. We'd love this these to both become a seasonal special on the Dessert Garden menu.
What We Ate π΄
Katzu Katzu
I wanted to originally get Katzu Katzu's ultimate 5cm mega pork katsu but it was unfortunately sold out by the time we got there. Being truffle season, I opted for the truffle wagyu katsudon instead.
The verdict?
It's probably not a dish I'd get again. To best appreciate the higher marbling of the, I felt like the wagyu katsu would've been better served on the side and seperate to the sauce - allowing the diner to season to their liking. In addition, I felt like the Japanese omelette (onion, soy and dashi) masked the flavours of the truffle sauce. Parsley garnishing on the top looked great, but might've subtracted from the subtle truffle flavours as well.
Having said all that - I'd love to see Katzu Katzu introduce a permanent gyukatsu option onto their menu in the form of a set. Given how popular gyukatsu seems to be on socials, I'm sure it'll do well (Signal House is the only place in Perth I'm aware of that currently does gyukatsu).
Paige seemed to enjoy the pork katsu here a lot more than our initial visit months ago. So it appears they've had the consistency down pat since my last visit!
Mama Mochi
After Katzu Katzu, we decided to swing by Mama Mochi if there was no line. The backup plan was Mimochi. Luckily, it seems like lines have died down for Mama Mochi now. Also, doesn't Paige's serve of mochi look like a π?
The strawberry daifuku was sold out by the time we ordered (8:30 pm on Friday) - so perhaps we have to still make it early here to secure a serving.
The hojicha mochi ice cream cup is their newest flavour and it didn't disappoint. I loved the hojicha flavour. PSA - Park Centre has recently refurbished their outside seating area. It looks great!
Tea Garden
A lazy local lunch. Cloudy skies and outdoor seating made for some rather crisp, photos.
Silver Sushi
Although these days we frequent Kai Japanese more often, Silver Sushi's been on our general rotation of food in our local area for over a decade. My go to here is their nanban chicken - a dish you don't see that often at Japanese restaurants. Servings at Silver Sushi are generous.
I shared the wasabi mayo prawn with a friend. This dish gives "Nobu at home" vibes. The dish that it homages, or shall I say, is "heavily" inspired by, sets you back around $38 at Nobu.
At over half the price, Silver Sushi's interpretation is well worth the coin and was executed well. It could probably be shared between three comfortably too. Something we'd get again for sure.
Thanh Dat
By 6:30 pm on a Sunday night, Thanh Dat's signature short rib pho sold out. Bummer! Paige and I decided to supplement our bowls of pho with their $3 beef brisket option. The cuts we received did run on the leaner side, so probably not something we'd add again (we'd just come earlier for the short rib next time π). Their pho was still great as ever though.
