WEEKLY DIGEST 123 | 13 SEP 2024
Our last big week of eating (for now)!
I started a new job this past Monday and needless to say, definitely made most of my final week of leave last week. We ate out a fair bit! This week we won't be eating out anywhere nearly as much, with only two meals out scheduled. I'm looking forward to spending waaaay less time writing the newsletter next week π€£.
Completely unrelated, but I've been using ChatGPT more and more in work and personal life. I've just used it to help me hunt down a couple key pieces of info for this newsletter and the related IG post too. It does occasionally hallucinate, but overall it's damn handy and a time saver.
Writing (especially when I time box how much time I want to spend writing these) has always been something I've wanted to improve on, so I've also asked ChatGPT to give me a couple pointers π. Let's see how they go.
On that note - let's get started.
Last week we checked out:
Strollioβs Luncheonette
Deli QT
Hoodburger
Chicken Lab
Meat & Wine Co
Tomo Japanese Restaurant
Sassy Bing
de Vina
Shot on Ricoh GR IIIx (Hoodburger, Strollio's Luncheonette*, Meat & Wine Co & de Vina) and Sony A7iii with Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 (G1) (everything else). Edited in Adobe Lightroom Classic.
*Exterior shot of Strollio's Luncheonette (edited using Ricoh Negative v2 camera profile).

ββThe Best Thing We Ate βοΈ
Strollio's Luncheonette
π 68 Lawley St, Tuart Hill WA 6060
We've also added in address for each place listed in the newsletter. Thanks to subscriber Craig for the suggestion!
One of Paige's long time cravings has been the tuna and artichoke melt from relatively new cafe, Strollio's Luncheonette. After my first bite and I knew why. With each bite you are met with complimenting flavours and textures - salty, cheesy, creamy and crunchy. My regret is probably not ordering one to myself. There's always next time..
Anyway, this wins the best eat of the week.
The sandwich left such an impression that it made my usual choice when available, a reuben, seem rather bland. Granted, the tuna and artichoke melt was super flavourful and probably took over my palate.
We'll be back next time we're NOR!
What We Ate π΄
Deli QT
π QT Perth, 133 Murray St, Perth WA 6000
QT Hotel launched their new cafe - Deli QT last week. Expect to find a range of sandwiches, including WA born and bred Conti rolls, beef dip sandwiches and a nostalgia evoking grilled cheese with tomato soup.
Paige and I were invited to the media launch last Tuesday night. Thank you to Vanessa from DGPR for having us!
I guess you can say here at Pekopekoeats, we've been eating our fair share of bread. Thinking back to what we ate last Tuesday, we can't really fault any of the sandwiches we had on the night, making it a great option for those keen for located near Murray Street Mall. Like I mentioned last week - we're spoiled for choice for quality burgers and also for delicious sandwiches.
The grilled cheese sourdough sando reminded me of the good old Sizzler's cheese toast. Dipped in their pumpkin soup. It brings back memories from childhood!
To end the night - a couple cinnamon doughnuts.
Hoodburger
I guess this is also kinda like a "redemption" burger, after the Upperhand burg I had last week which was just alright (I mean this in the least derogatory way). The photo was shot with their red tables in the background. It made for a very product photography-esque shot!
Chicken Lab
π Shop 6A/49 Great Eastern Hwy, Rivervale WA 6103
Last Thursday night I caught up with a friend. Her request was "Korean fried chicken". After consulting with some foodie friends, Chicken Lab was where we ended up. Great fried chicken! The restaurant was packed when we visited around 7:30 pm ish, which always is a great sign.
No complaints on the chicken here. I appreciated the potato gems instead of usual chips.
Meat & Wine Co
π 108 St Georges Terrace, Perth WA 6000
We ended the (metaphorical work) week with Meat & Wine Co's express lunch. For the price of $49, you get three courses - an entree, main and dessert. Very good value if you ask me!
The mushroom sauce did set us back an additional $5 ish. Although the steaks were cooked perfectly to spec - that is, medium rare, the nature of lean rump steaks make for an eating experience best complemented with a sauce we think.
Tomo Japanese Restaurant
π 3/420 Hay St, Subiaco WA 6008
A sleeper pick we found last Friday was Tomo Japanese Restaurant in Subiaco. The quality reminds us of the OG Kou Sushi (now Swan Sushi). Both sashimi bowls were packed with sashimi and left me pretty satisfied (something I don't say too often!). Serving sizes were great.
Sassy Bing
π 63a Aberdeen St, Northbridge WA 6003
Friday morning, we also stumbled across Sassy Bing on socials and decided that we'd check it out for dessert after dinner at Tomo Japanese Restaurant. And it just happened to be that during dinner at Tomo, owner Sass reached out!
A serendipitous occasion for sure.
Sassy Bing is one of Perth's few Thai dessert options. Owner Sass comes from over a decade of hospo experience. Like me, she spent time helping out at her parent's Thai restaurant - Thai Corner in Applecross and has been on a number of hospo stints since.
Sass has recently opened up her Thai dessert concept in Northbridge - taking over what used to be Hustle Street (the original M-Town).
We'll be posting more about Sassy Bing at a later point. Thank you to Sass for the warm hospitality!
de Vina
π 48 Catalano Circuit, Canning Vale, 6155
And to end another week of eating, we have another classic Sunday lazy local lunch. This time, I revisited de Vina at the now back-to-life Tan's Food Court in Canning Vale.
This time as I walked in, I noticed a full house of customers - great for the businesses at Tan's Food Court.
If you haven't had broken rice before - it's a flavour bomb. Sweet, salty, acid, fat and heat. All in one dish! Lots of fun textures too. The dish reminds me of Mum's broken rice, so it gets a "would get again" from me.
On the banh mi side, although I probably still standby my previous comment I made months ago, of going across the road to Phoever for a larger banh mi for $1 more, you still are getting a quality banh mi at de Vina. If I was already at Tan's and was craving banh mi, I wouldn't hesitate to get it from de Vina.
