β€Œβ€ŒThe Best Thing We Ate ⭐️

Warabimochi Kamakura

πŸ“ 810 Albany Hwy, East Victoria Park WA 6101

Kamakura Warabimochi simple packaging (10pc) original flavour $16.80

Unsurprisingly, Warabimochi Kamakura comes up on top as the best thing we ate over the past two weeks. Since it opened last Friday, lines (as expected) have been out of the door. They've even sold out too. We've got dinner planned in Vic Park next Friday and a friend wants to try Kamakura out. So we'll see how we go!

Uji kintoki $20

Their kakigori will make for an excellent summer dessert, once the weather heats up.

What We Ate 🍴

Katzu Katzu

πŸ“ 861 Albany Hwy, East Victoria Park WA 6101

Hand holding bowl of katzu
Mega pork katsudon $30

Finally! After four visits I was able to get my hands on a serving of their mega pork katsudon. I probably should've taken a photo of each piece of katsu, as each piece was around 5 cm thick (as advertised).

Is it something I'd get again? Probably not. It was a bit of a novelty (and I suppose I knew that going in). Reason being, the cut of pork was a little more athletic (lean), so I'd stick to ordering the usual tonkatsu here, which is a good balance of fatty to lean (based off our two previous viists).

Still glad I was able to try it though.

Les Dimanches

πŸ“ 19A Broadway, Nedlands WA 6009

Close up of choux pastry
Candy melon choux $8.5 - choux au craquelin, calvados diplomat, Queensland candy melon

Thank you to Claudia for inviting us a couple weeks back! After operating at the Freo Markets for some time, Les Dimanches has opened up a cafe near UWA.

Iced hojicha (didn't note price πŸ™ˆ)

We got treated to an array of delicious pastries. More on this later. From memory, their matcha and hojicha are whisked in store (it was good).

Artem Coffee

πŸ“ Shop 1/769 Canning Hwy, Applecross WA 6153

Back at one of our favourite cafes in Perth, Artem Coffee. It's been a while since we've visited. And it's also the first time we've visited their new, bigger branch too.

Close up of Reuben sandwich with French fries
Reuben sandwich $28 - 150gm house smoked brisket pastrami, house sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing, pickles, rye bread & pickled vinegar fries

I couldn't not get my usual - Reuben sandwich. The sandwich now comes with well seasoned side of French fries with a light spray of vinegar. Reuben was still delicious as ever.

Close up of prawn roll with fried lotus chips
Prawn roll $24 - poached prawns, roasted sesame mayo, tobiko, kimchi, tempura furikake on brioche roll & lotus chips

Paige got her usual - the prawn roll.

And to wash it down, an Earl Grey based London fogspanner.

Senchan

πŸ“ Shop 13/23 Junction Blvd, Cockburn Central WA 6164

Not just Perth, but Australia recently got the first machi-chuka style Japanese restaurant. Machi-chuka refers to Japanese-style Chinese restaurants, which are found throughout Japan. Essentially, it's Japan's interpretation of Chinese food.

Growing up with parents in the Cantonese food scene, it was definitely fun to try machi-chuka a number of times in Japan. The food has some familiarity, but also is a little different, as it's adjusted for local tastes.

Close up of fried rice with prawns and pickled raddish
Chahan $16 - Japanese style fried rice

We'd come back for the chahan (the pickled raddish was quite refreshing) and we also enjoyed the soy ramen.

Sanco Japanese Cuisine

πŸ“ 2/19 Douro Rd, South Fremantle WA 6162

Close up of sukiyaki in pot with flame
Sukiyaki hot pot set $45 - Sukiyaki, sashimi 3 kinds, kakiage tempura, rice, miso soup & pickles

Sanco Japanese Cuisine is a "if you know, you know" type of spot. It's also a place we've been going to for years. We dropped in last weekend after seeing their sukiyaki special on Facebook earlier in the week.

Unfortunately by the time you read this, the special will be over. But hopefully we see more specials like this (we're hoping for shabu shabu next) from husband and wife team - Ken-san (one of the OG sushi chefs at James Parker) and Tomo-san.
