The Best Thing We Ate ⭐️
Mortadeli
📍 23A Hampden Rd, Nedlands WA 6009
Our third visit to Mortadeli didn't disappoint. It has become one of the few places where we commit our food faux pas of "getting the same thing as each other".
This time, we enjoyed a Mortadeli sandwich, each to ourselves (by far our favourite sandwich here!).
What We Ate 🍴
Izakaya Tori
📍 610 Albany Hwy, Victoria Park WA 6100
Izakaya Tori's one of the newer additions to the Japanese scene in Vic Park. They're walk in only, but we managed to get a table pretty quickly around 6:30 pm on a Friday night. The venue is fun and a visual experience and so is the website (their cursor is pretty cute).
The place is run by the same Korean folks behind Izakaya Sumi in Claremont. Menu wise, you'll find a couple hints of Korean influence - a bit of kimchi here and there.
Wings were great and went down well with a glass of beer.
Their agedashi tofu mentaiko was a fun dish, with the cheese.
We did order a couple other things - mentaiko fried rice, yellowtail sashimi and udon. Dishes were generally fine, though nothing really stood enough to warrant a second visit for us.
Pietro Gelateria
📍 The Park Centre, 789 Albany Hwy, East Victoria Park WA 6101
Following Izakaya Tori, Pietro Gelateria was our dessert of the night, after an unsuccessful attempt at getting mochi from Kamakura Warabimochi. By the time we joined the queue at 8:15 pm ish on Friday, they had sold out. Drinks were still available however.
Not to fear - Pietro to the rescue. As part of their monthly speciallys, they've currently got range of Japanese inspired flavours on rotation.
Japanese Neoapolitan and their kinako & Okinawa sugar caramel were our picks.
The Neapolitan features matcha, black sesame and sakura, though I found it a little too floral for my personal tastes. Paige opted for the kinako and Okinawa sugar but found the caramel to be a little overpowering. We wouldn't have minded a stronger kinako flavour.
The star of our show was our old trusty - their vegan dark chocolate.
Hifumiya
📍 Shop, 2, Ground Level, 100/104 Murray St, Perth WA 6000
We can never go wrong with a meal at Hifumiya - one of our favourite Japanese places in Perth. It's one of the places that are on our regular rotation.
In other related news, a new Japanese dining concept, Ginza Nana Alley will be opening up right by Hifumiya (we saw a glipse of it a month or so back). Can't wait to check it out! Vibes are immaculate.
For more on Hifumiya, check out the article I wrote some time ago.
Siew's Kopitiam
📍 113 Aberdeen Street, Northbridge WA
On Saturday night, I treated a good friend of mine (my best man actually!) to dinner at Siew's Kopitiam. The place was close to full house when we dined in.
Food was good. The Siew's signature fried chicken had a rich, salted egg yolk sauce.
The star of the show was the fried kway teow - the "benchmark" dish we call it. A dish we must order at any Malaysian restaurant. It had decent wok hei. I also appreciated the pork lard - something you don't see as often in my experience eating fried kway teow in Perth.
Would we recommend Siew's Kopitiam? Yes. Food overall was great. Pricing, compared to your suburban Malaysian Chinese restaurants will be higher, but is reasonable, given in city location and the fun vibe of the restaurant.
Costco
📍 142 Dunreath Dr, Perth Airport WA 6105
Sunday involved dropping into Costco and picking up some wedding supplies - wet wipes and.. 180L of bottled water. I successfully stopped myself from grabbing a slice of their pizza, but we still succumbed to a sweet treat (Paige insisted, okay).
The choc chip cookie was fairly rich and can be comfortably shared between two.
