ββThe Best Thing We Ate βοΈ
Cherry & Grapes Night
π 20 Emerald Terrace, West Perth WA 6005
Last Friday we visited Cherry & Grapes for their pop-up tasting menu. Thank you for Chef James for having us.
Cherry & Grapes' tasting menu is the evolution of Kozy Restaurant's previous dinner offering. Now, 6 courses are offered for $99pp, which for the quality of the food, was very reasonable. A number of a la carte dishes are also available. Chef James was previously the sous chef at two star restaurant Alla Prima in Seoul, so you can expect a certain level of excellence with that.
The favourite dish of the night (and of this newsletter) was the squid. This dish started us off strong. A texture and flavour party in your mouth.
In second place was the spaghetti - a nice way to end the mains. It was beautifully umami and reminded us of lobster yee mien.
In third place, house bread with yuza and dashima butter.
The yuza (Korean for yuzu) and dashima (Korean for kombu) was well balanced. Hints of saltiness, sweetness and fattiness meant we used the entire quenelle between the two of us.
The tasting menu is only for a limited time as it's a pop-up - so be sure to book yourselves in sooner, rather than later. From a beverages perspective, the cocktails were very well priced.
What We Ate π΄
Nooodling Ramen
π 1382 Albany Hwy, Cannington
This is the second invite for this newsletter. Thank you to Leanne from Bento Box Studio and Leon from Nooodling for having us.
Nooodling has gone a slight rebrand and have recently introduced Jiro style ramen onto their menu, in addition their existing offering of Chinese Malaysian favourites. For those uninitiated, Jiro-style ramen is a type of ramen originationg from Tokyo based store Ramen Jiro that now has a cult like following. Jiro-style ramen is about massive portions of thick noodles in a rich, garlicky broth and a myriad of toppings.
The toppings to price ratio here was great - you'll be pretty hard pressed to find a bowl of ramen with chashu and egg what these guys charge.
Be sure to also grab their karaage as the $5 serve was very generous!
Bayswater Hotel
π 78-80 Railway Parade, Bayswater WA 6053
This is the final invite for this newsletter. Thanks to DGPR for having us!
The Baysie Hotel recently went through a major renovation making it a pretty great family venue. They've even got a 3-ish story high slide (for small humans A.K.A. kids only, unfortunately).
The standout dishes for the night were the buffalo chicken wings and the pizza. I quite enjoyed the batter that was reminiscent of Korean fried chicken.
Pizza here is wood-fired with a 48 hour rested dough. Quality wise, it was reminiscent of something you'd find from a pizzeria, so we were pleasantly surprised!
Fallow
π 314 William St, Perth WA 6000
We were treated to a birthday lunch a couple weeks back at Fallow, a newly opened eatery in Northbridge.
The best thing we ate during our visit was their deliciously flakey Berkshire pork pithivier.
Dolce & Salato
πStockland Bull Creek Shopping Centre, Shop 14/46 Benningfield Rd, Bull Creek WA 6149
Dolce & Salato has been a place on my radar for a while. For a lazy Sunday lunch, I dropped in weeks back and picked up two sandwiches. From memory - the fave was the lombo. I'll have to give their Conti roll a try next time.
Qin's Lanzhou Beef Noodles
π 873 Albany Hwy, East Victoria Park WA 6101
Qin's Lanzhou Beef Noodles has been on rotation throughout the year. Our go to here is their signature handmade beef noodle soup with the thin noodles. We'd come to Qin's over Mr. King Beef Noodles in Carousel if you are very hungry, as Qin's offer a free noodle refill for each bowl of noodles.
Warabimochi Kamakura
π 810 Albany Hwy, East Victoria Park WA 6101
You would've seen our post on Warabimochi Kamakura just over a month ago, when it first opened in late September. We made a visit two weekends ago and can confirm the lines have since died down.
This time we opted for the warabimochi with ice-cream. You could probably stretch a serve of this between two.
Amore Mio
π277 Guildford Rd, Maylands WA 6051
Another great Italian joint with a big menu covering pizzas, pastas and desserts. My favourite during our visit was their golosa pizza. Pizza crust here ran a little "thin and crispy" style.
We'd probably still go to Rossonero, just down the road, which remains as our favourite from a crust / dough perspective. But if you're after a place with a couple dozen different pizzas, this is your spot!
Ready Eddie's
π Unit 5c/817 Beeliar Dr, Cockburn Central WA 6164
A Filo comfort food restaurant that we've driven past too many times until now. Their fried chicken was also very good!
Sarah's Home Kitchen
π 46-48 Catalano Cct, Canning Vale WA 6155
Inside the now revived Tan's Food Court, you'll find nearly a dozen or so restaurants. Tucked away in the corner is Sarah's Home Kitchen - specialising in Korean and some Japanese dishes.
Our pick here is their kimbap which is great value for the set. Clean and delicious tasting too!
NOBU Perth
π Crown Metropol Perth, Great Eastern Hwy, Burswood WA 6100
Two of our favourite things to get at NOBU is the sweet prawn (amaebi) and the wagyu carpaccio.
To our knowledge, we haven't seen any dupes of the dry miso outside of NOBU. Whereas while you can find other interpretations of the wagyu carpaccio throughout Perth, but none can compare to the NOBU original. The dish itself was created by former head chef (and now owner of Mica Creamery), Chef Leif Huru, during his time at NOBU.
Kimbap Heaven
π Unit 9/18 Milford St, East Victoria Park WA 6101
Our second visit to Kimbap Heaven involved trying a couple new dishes - their fried chicken and naengmyeon. Both of which were great and easily compared to the quality you'd find at other Korean restaurants throughout Perth (not that we doubted it to begin with).
Pricing here for the kimbap is a little steeper than Sarah's Home Kitchen, but you'll find a larger menu here with a number of Korean street foods.
Ancom
π 564 Beaufort St, Mount Lawley WA 6050
If it wasn't for our visit to Cherry & Grape, Ancom's banh khot would've won the best thing we ate. Each morsel was flavourful, yet light and refreshing. Pricing here is a little more expensive compared to your typical Vietnamese restaurants, but it reflects the beautiful modern fit-out of the restaurant.
Gelato Messina
π 497 Beaufort St, Highgate WA 6003
Finally, the end of the newsletter! We ended our night in Mount Lawley at Gelato Messina where we had two scoops of gelato as our sweet treat for the night.
Paige's usual here is their dulce de leche. I opted for the milk chocolate with chocolate peanut fudge - very reminiscent of a Hershey's peanut butter cup.
