β€Œβ€ŒThe Best Thing We Ate ⭐️

Ginza Midai

πŸ“ Shop 3, Ground Level, 100/104 Murray St, Perth WA 6000

Close up of platter with lemon, uni, caviar and salad with a wooden spoon
Snow crab platter deluxe $120 - gently flaked crab meat with uni and caviar, served with elegant Tosa vinegar and crab miso jelly

The best thing we ate this week was the snow crab platter deluxe at Ginza Midai. Simple yet delicious - highlighting the best of the produce.

Close up of steak with potato puree
Grilled kuroge wagyu steak with sansho sauce $98 - kuroge wagyu and foie gras steak, served with creamy potato puree and aromatic sansho sauce

In second place, was their grilled kuroge wagyu. Kuroge wagyu refers to a black-haired breed of wagyu and is the most famous and widely bred of the four native Japanese cattle breeds. Each bite was rich with marbling. Foie gras added an additional layer of richness.

We felt a little apprehensive when ordering this given the price and potential serving size (from what we've seen online). But our serving size was enough to be shared between 2-3 people. Anecdotally, we did hear some friends received a smaller portion compared to ours, so YMMV.

What We Ate 🍴

Sup So Good

πŸ“ 3/297 William St, Northbridge WA 6003

Last week I made the mistake of going to not one, but two places in Northbridge without checking that they were open on Wednesday. The first of them was Thanh Dat, for their beef rib pho.

Pho beef rib $25 - beef noodle soup in hot rockstone bowl with beef ribs, Chinese donut & egg on the side

Luckily there's plenty of great Viet food in Perth. Sup So Good came to the rescue (and was only a short walk from Thanh Dat).

Sup so Good's best known for their rockstone wagyu - that is, serving their pho in a hot rockstone bowl that maintains the temperature of the broth. It's essentially like a mini hotpot. Yes, it is a little gimmicky (I just wanna eat, man), but I'm sure some people might find it fun. Pho was fine.

Cafe Guilty Pleasure

πŸ“ 1/222 James St, Northbridge WA 6003

How was the dessert? "Not too sweet βœ…"

Milk tea bingsu $16

Matcha croffle (double) $15

We've been here many dozen times. Full thoughts in our article linked.

Cafe Guilty Pleasure (Northbridge & Mount Lawley)
A Korean dessert cafe with cute and dainty interiors, serving up some of Perth’s best croffle, bingsu and cakes that aren’t too sweet.

Monkey & Bird

πŸ“ Shop 3, Ground Level, 100/104 Murray St, Perth WA 6000

After dinner at Ginza Midai, of course we'd wanted a sweet treat. Ginza Nana Alley is still busy, so we ended up waiting nearly an hour to get four seats at Monkey & Bird. Once you're inside you are pretty well insulated from the outside world, so I don't blame people for staying long inside.

Close up of purin with cherry on top
Purin $7.5 - Japanese old style egg pudding

We tried their purin (which was unfortunately sold out by the time we headed to Monkey & Bird during Ginza Nana Alley's media night). I'd describe this as soft, creamy and just sweet enough.

Pelican Croissanterie

πŸ“ 1/9 Archibald St, Willagee WA 6156

Last week I had my first successful mission to Pelican Croissanterie. It only involved getting there at 8 am (I am a night owl so getting up early is a struggle for me πŸ˜†).

Top down shot of sausage bun and cheese croissant
Sausage & cheese $8 & Gratin croissant $9.5

The display cabinets were full at 8 am. Everything was delicious and flakey, as expected! The folks behind Pelican Croissanterie previously ran the well regarded Harvest Patisserie in Scarborough. Our favourite was the gratin croissant - which made for the ultimate cheese croissant.

Top down shot of berry danish and pan au cholat
Mixed berry danish $6.5 & Pan au cholat $6.5

The Cray

πŸ“ Unit 13 Essex St, Fremantle WA 6160

Top down shot of seafood platter with shellfish and salad and bread
The Cray Executive Platter $295 - full grilled local crayfish, grilled snapper, creamy garlic prawns, chilli mussels, prawn and scallop skewers, salt and pepper calamari, oysters (6), Moreton Bay bugs, grilled tiger prawns, Turkish bread & marinated octopus salad

Paige and I both recently celebrated our birthdays and were treated to a lovely lunch by her parents. Apparently The Cray's Executive Platter feeds two people. I call that a lie. It fed four of us - very comfortably! Great spread.

Seafresh Myaree

πŸ“ 488 Marmion St, Myaree WA 6154

Top down shot of sashimi platter with salmon, kingfish, scallop and ocean trout
Sashimi platter (approx $108 worth - inclusive of $10 arrangement fee) - Tasmanian salmon, kingfish, scallop and ocean trout

Last Saturday night involved ordering a bunch of sashimi and oysters from Seafresh Myaree. Quality was fresh as always.

They have recently introduced a $10 sashimi arrangement fee, which is understandable, given the amount of time it does take to artfully arrange a sashimi platter.

It's probably enough of a reason for us to check out Angelo Seafood's sashimi offering again, given the $10 arrangement fee does constitute a substantial percent of the total platter cost.

Wang Xiang Noodle

πŸ“ Unit 1/43 Burrendah Blvd, Willetton WA 6155

Rounding up this newsletter is Wang Xiang Noodle Perth. This restaurant franchise hails from Malaysia, with a handful of outlets in JB and eastern Malaysia.

Close up of pork soup with vegetables and pork lard
DN1A kolok mee + meat soup $16.9

Their recommended dishes are their chicken rice and pork meat soup. Unfortunately their chicken rice was sold out on the day due to an injury the chef had. It'll definitely be what we try next time we dine in.

SN2A Bee hoon soup (meat only) $16.9

The highlight for us was the meat soup which was clean and comforting - the type you can drink all of. Reminiscent of what my parents would make.

Paige ordered the kolok mee and meat soup. The portion size for this ran on the smaller size.

To finish everything off - an iced teh tarik each. These ranked as one of the better teh tariks we've had.
