In totally unrelated, prompt engineering news, I learned you can get ChatGPT to write out alt text for images. Alt text is the text used to describe images read out by screen readers, which is used by visually impaired. Usually takes 5-10 minutes to do this, so this'll be a huge time saver.

β€Œβ€ŒThe Best Thing We Ate ⭐️

Bob Jo

πŸ“ 21 Angove St, North Perth WA 6006

Our favourite meal over the past couple of weeks was Bob Jo. My fave during the visit was their bossam - which probably rivals that of Marubang (our goto spot for bossam).

A plate of sliced pork belly sprinkled with sesame seeds and served with pickled vegetables.
Bossam $38 - 9 Hour Sous Vide pork belly served with fresh lettuce leaves to wrap the pork & dip in spicy sauce.

Also good - the jokbal.

I'm not normally a tteokbokki person, but their rose tteokbokki was delicious too!

A hot stone pot filled with spicy soup containing vegetables and tofu.
Rose TTEOK BOK KI (Creamy) $19.5 - Stir-fried rice cake with assorted vegetables & special Korean style spicy creamy sauce.

Menu's below for those interested.

What We Ate 🍴

Wang Xiang Noodle Perth

πŸ“ Unit 1/43 Burrendah Blvd, Willetton WA 6155

Steamed chicken breast on a plate with soy-based sauce, accompanied by rice in the background.
Chicken rice $13.9

Finally got around to trying out Wang Xiang Noodle's chicken rice, as it wasn't available due to the chef sustaining an injury during the opening week. It lives up to the standard of a good chicken rice.

Paige especially likes the rice here as it's coloured with turmeric - bringing back memories of chicken rice in Malaysia. Especially chicken rice from The Chicken Rice Shop. There's also free flow chicken rice soup available (self service).

Siew's Kopitiam

πŸ“ 113 Aberdeen St, Northbridge WA 6003

A bowl of stir-fried noodles garnished with fresh green onions and a wedge of lemon.
Mee goreng $17

My second visit to Siew's Kopitiam was with a larger group, so we were able to try a number of other dishes. Can't fault any of their dishes. The decadent "Siew's Signature Fried Chicken" is a must order though - if you're a fan of salted egg yolk.

Siew’s Signature Fried Chicken $26

Tiara Dessert Cafe

πŸ“ 89 Lake St, Northbridge WA 6003

After dinner at Siew's, we headed to the nearby Tiara Dessert Cafe. Tiara Dessert Cafe is one of the handful of growing Korean dessert cafes within Northbridge.

Our last visit was in 2022 (feels like an eternity ago). Bingsoo pricing here is a little steeper at $22 (compared to Cafe Guilty Pleasure's which is around $16, during my visit last month). Quality wise, it's comparable. I do believe they make some of their syrups in house as well - which would justify the higher prices.

Menu attached.

Coolby Asian Wok

πŸ“ Shop 27/78 Coolbellup Ave, Coolbellup WA 6163

Crispy seafood chow mien
Sang mee (crispy noodle) $18

Hawker cuisine fave, Bull Creek Hawker underwent new management last year and the chef left has since moved to Coolby Asian Wok.

Paige and (my fatass) I ordered 3 staple dishes. Servings ran generous (I actually had beef kuey teow 2 days later and it reheated beautifully) albeit on the slight salty side.

A plate of stir-fried flat noodles with vegetables and a sprinkle of fried shallots.
Beef kuey teow $18

No complaints about any of the dishes.

Beef hor fun egg sauce $18.5

Our only niggle was their chicken rice wasn't available on the night we visit, so we'll be back soon to try it!

Phil Bean

πŸ“ 17 Tribute St W, Shelley WA 6148

A small black bowl of spicy kimchi stew garnished with microgreens.
Yukgaejang (spicy beef soup) $19.5 - shredded beef with various vegetables in beef broth

Phil Bean is another place we haven't been to in years. According to Lightroom - our last visit was in June 2020. We visited on the weekend for lunch and it was pretty busy.

Food here is ok - nothing too noteworthy with my serve of yukgaejang. Phil Bean does do a number of reasonably priced set menus as well. Do note they're only open during lunch.

Fun fact - some of my photos are up on the wall here!

Uncle Six Hawker

πŸ“ 3/41 Burrendah Blvd, Willetton WA 6155

A plate of Hainanese chicken served with soy sauce and garnished with cilantro and cucumber slices.
Ginger scallion steam chicken rice $13.5

After the chicken rice miss at Coolby Asian Wok, we were left craving chicken rice. Luckily, Uncle Six Hawker offers a very decent chicken rice.

We find the chicken rice soup here to be a little blander compared to Wang Xiang's offering.

Drinks here (our usual is ice teh tarik) can be a little hit or miss, so Wang Xiang gets the win. Food wise, Uncle Six offers a much larger menu, but ultimately, I think both are comparable in food quality.
