Love the Showa era decorations at the Ageto Ramen stall

I once again find myself at 11:45 pm on Thursday night smashing out this newsletter. This edition might be a little shorter as I wanna head to bed soon ๐Ÿ™ˆ.

Nothing's really concrete in terms of this weekend's eats, except for a sashimi party on Friday night. Let's see what we end up eating in next week's newsletter ๐Ÿ˜‹.

โ€Œโ€ŒThe Best Thing We Ate โญ๏ธ

Hansik

๐Ÿ“ 4/7 Woodpecker Ave, Willetton WA 6155

The best meal we had last week was at Hansik. We were a little apprehensive to return as we had an average experience during our last visit two years ago. During that last visit they had a very watered down menu - not really inspiring us to make return visit. This is despite being big fans of Hansik (so much so we wrote an article many moons ago Hansik (Willetton)).

They've since undergone new management since November so we decided to go check it out again.

A black bowl filled with spicy kimchi fried rice topped with a fried egg and seaweed strips.
Kimchi pork fried rice (+cheese & egg $3.5) $21.4

Dishes were all good! Hansik previously served our favourite kimchi fried rice in Perth. The current iteration is ok - far better than Bob Jo's but it doesn't top their old one.

Having said that, we'll probably give the kimchi fried rice here another try, without the cheese as we found that masked a lot of the flavour.

A close-up of crispy, glazed Korean fried chicken sprinkled with sesame seeds.
Honey soy L (8 pc) $28

Chicken was up to standard. My only nitpick - I think it needed a little more sauce, or a quick toss in the sauce to completely cover the chicken. I found many of my bites to lack sauce.

A whole Korean-style fried pancake with a dipping sauce on a black tray.
Kimchi jeon $18.9

The last of our usual order - kimchi jeon. Up to spec!

What We Ate ๐Ÿด

Monsterella

๐Ÿ“ 46 Grantham St, Wembley WA 6014

Last Friday night involved grabbing Monsterella takeaway and catching Sing Sing, at Somerville Auditorium as part of Lotterywest Films. It did also rain, which was not fun ๐Ÿซ .

A mushroom and cheese pizza with a charred crust in a white box.
FORO $27 - FIOR DI LATTE, MUSHROOMS, TRUFFLE OIL OREGANO, PECORINO MOZZARELLA AND TALEGGIO

Our fave pizza of the two was the foro. Can't go wrong with the mushrooms, truffle oil and cheese combo.

A prosciutto and rocket pizza with a crispy crust in a white box.
TINA $27 - FIOR DI LATTE, MUSHROOMS, PROSCIUTTO CRUDO AND FRESH ROCKET

Monsterella used to be our fave for pizza a couple years back, but for the past 3 years or so, we've given that title to Rossonero Pizzeria (Maylands). Pizzas here run around 25% cheaper and we prefer the flavour combos a bit more. Having said that - Monsterella still serves up excellent pizzas in Perth.

Not pictured - their hand cut truffled pappardelle carbonara. A must order here (still as good as we remember).

Ageto Ramen

๐Ÿ“Shop 6/46-48 Catalano Cct, Canning Vale WA 6155

We ended up at Canning Vale Food Court after rocking up to Suzie's Makan Place only to find them closed as they're on holiday ๐Ÿฅฒ. It's alright, we've already scheduled in a visit to Suzie's once they're back ๐Ÿ˜†.

A bowl of ramen with sliced pork, green onions, and mushrooms in a dark-colored broth.
Kuro ramen (black garlic)(+egg $2.5) $18

This marks our 3rd or 4th time trying the ramen at Ageto Ramen. It's headed by some ex-Hakata Gensuke chefs, so tonkotsu broth ramen is their specialty.

Paige and I agreed that best bowl of the day, was my kuro ramen. Their "normal" level of black garlic was a goldilocks, just right, amount of garlic.

A bowl of ramen with sliced beef, green onions, and mushrooms in a light-colored broth.
Ichi ramen $15.5 (original)

Their ichi ramen is their original tonkotsu broth. Pricing for ramen here is very, very reasonable. Ramen here definitely saves us the visit out to Vic Park to Hakata Gensuke.

A plate of golden-brown pan-fried gyoza arranged neatly beside a dipping sauce.
Pork gyoza (5pc) $6.5

What we do think Hakata Gensuke do better, are gyoza. Ageto Ramen's gyoza filling has higher moisture content, whereas Hakata Gensuke's runs drier - our preference when gyoza are pan fried.

Sarah's Home Kitchen

๐Ÿ“46-48 Catalano Cct, Canning Vale WA 6155

A bowl of ramen each and 2.5 ish gyoza to share, wasn't enough. So we had some Korean sushi (just being cheeky here ๐Ÿ™ˆ). Kimbap here is well priced!

Emperor's Kitchen

๐Ÿ“55 Farrington Rd, Leeming WA 6149

Pineapple bun

Wrapping up this week we have dim sum. I wasn't sure whether to go to Emperor's Kitchen or the newly rebranded Dim Sum Palace (formerly Golden BBQ), as both are rated similarly. My friend decided on Emperor's Kitchen in the end.

It was a good choice. Rocking up at 1 pm ish, we were met with a small line - definitely a good problem to have. It was full house, but we managed to get a table quickly.

A dim sum dumpling topped with bright orange fish roe, held by black chopsticks.
Shumai

I only grabbed snaps of the rather cute turtle shaped pineapple bun and shumai. Dim sum was good. Their chilli oil also had nice punch to it ๐ŸฅŠ.
