β€Œβ€ŒThe Best Thing We Ate ⭐️

Di Chiera Brothers Continental Store

πŸ“ 527 Fitzgerald St, North Perth WA 6006

A hand holding a sandwich with lettuce, cheese, and meat, sliced in half.
Chicken schnitzel roll $16.5 - chicken schnitzel, lettuce & mayo

The best thing we ate last week was the chicken schnitzel roll at the recently reborn-Di Chiera Brothers Continental Store. I particularly enjoyed the soft and chewy bread roll they used. It provided a very nice textural contrast against combination of crispy chicken, crispy lettuce and creamy mayo.

A hand holding a sandwich with sliced roast beef, cheese, and sauce, cut in half.
Philly cheese steak roll $18 - fillet steak, onion, capsicum, jalapeno & provolone cheese

Runner up, was the Philly cheese steak roll. Not too heavy. Just right.

A hand holding a sub-style sandwich with deli meats, cheese, and vegetables.
Continental roll $13.5 - mixed meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato & melanzane

Lastly the staple roll - a Conti roll. Not much to say on this, except that the ingredients speak for themselves.

Service here was lovely too. We'll be back!

What We Ate 🍴

Ongrill

πŸ“ 227 Bulwer St, Perth WA 6000

After over two decades of operation, Nine Fine Dining finally shut down. In its place we now have Ongrill - a modern Korean restaurant.

A wooden platter with grilled meats, salad and dipping sauces.
Set Dul 4 Meats BBQ Platter $109 - kimchi coleslaw, scallion pesto, ssamjang mayo dips vege sticks, ssam & beef short ribs

On the menu here you'll find BBQ platters - similar to the ones you'll find at middle eastern restaurants, saving you the hassle of BBQing, as well as your usual fare of Korean dishes (soups and fried chicken). They also offer customisable bibimbap bowls. Orders can be made entirely via a QR code ordering system.

A black stone bowl filled with kimchi and tofu stew, garnished with green onions.
Kimchi jjigae $24 - kimchi stew with pork belly and various vegetables & rice

There's nothing on the menu that commands a second visit for us, but having said that, food was fine overall and meat was all nicely grilled.

Pietro Gelateria (Northbridge)

πŸ“3/323 William St, Perth WA 6000

Close up of gelato in a paper cup
Ricotta, orange & dark chocolate $6.6

After dinner you gotta get dessert right? We walked down from Ongrill to Pietro Gelateria. Still probably our favourite gelato spot in Perth.

Silver Sushi Willetton

πŸ“ 1/41 Burrendah Blvd, Willetton WA 6155

A hand holding a bowl with salmon sashimi, cucumbers, and avocado.
Salmondon $23

We live pretty close by to Silver Sushi, and after visiting last Friday, we questioned why we don't go back more often. They've just revamped the place, giving it a more elevated feel.

A plate of fried meat with tartare sauce on top top, served with cherry tomatoes.
Nanban chicken set $22

All the dishes here were consistent as ever. Paige's pick is the salmondon (though, playing devil's advocate, we can make this at home for a fraction of the price) while mine is their chicken nanban.

A udon bowl with shredded meat, lemon slices, and a side of crispy topping.
Cold udon $11.5

Our friend opted for their cold udon and some vegetable tempura. Looked good!

A close-up of deep-fried tempura with a golden crispy texture.
Vege tempura $6
A bowl with golden-brown eggplant tempura stacked on top, garnished with green onions.
Tempura eggplant with miso sauce $14

For sides we got their tempura eggplant and a sushi roll to share.

I'm not usually an eggplant type of guy, but the tempura eggplant here is delicious - a nice contrast between sweet, salty, sour and crunchy. If we see it on the menu, we usually order it (the nasu miso at Nobu is also one of our staple orders, and this is a good homage to that dish).

A sushi roll with various toppings, served on a glass plate.
Aburi mentaiko salmon uramaki (bite-size) 8pc $20

The aburi mentaiko sushi roll as expected, ran more on the heavy side.

On a completely unrelated note, Paige and I's phone photo galleries are full of menus and I have terabytes of food photos. So I figured I'd get the ball rolling and start posting them up here as well, on dedicated pages - even if it's low effort.

Silver Sushi (Willetton)
An affordable and constant suburban Japanese restaurant that we’ve been frequenting for over 10+ years.

Bibra Lake Lunch Bar

πŸ“1/40 Port Pirie St, Bibra Lake WA 6163

On Saturday we swung by Bibra Lake Lunch Bar before dropping into Eurostyle Smallgoods Butcher to pick up some weisswurst for Sunday dinner.

A slate platter with three banh mi sandwiches, filled with ingredients and garnished with herbs.
Traditional, egg banh mi (special order) and roasted pork belly banh mi $13 each

This probably marks our.. I don't know - 10th? Visit to Bibra Lake Lunch Bar? πŸ˜†

My long term thoughts on this place: I prefer their "lighter" (less stuffed to the brim) banh mi - like their pork meat ball and now off the menu (but available on request) egg banh mi. These banh mi are a little harder to come by in Perth - with the most ubiquitous roll being filled with roast pork belly.

Maybe it's cause I grew up eating the OG Girrawheen, pre-made banh mi (a blasphemy some would consider), commonly available at Asian grocery stores. These banh mi had a less is more approach and had your classic Viet cold cuts. But there was a beauty in this, and it allowed you to enjoy each and every ingredient.
