WEEKLY DIGEST 138 | 28 FEB 2025

A new (to us) matcha dessert cafe and Korean restaurant.

WEEKLY DIGEST 138 | 28 FEB 2025

We did it again. We explored new places πŸ˜†.

The only thing we've got locked in this week is Beaconsfield Wine Bar. We'll see what we get up to.

We're also off to Melbourne next weekend. We will also see what we get up to, food wise (I'm confident that there's a myriad of food options that don't require you to book 4 months in advance).

This week we checked out:

Canton on Roe
RoyAl's Chicken and Burgers
Matcha Garden
G'day Korean & Japanese Restaurant
Chicken On Charcoal Flame

β€Œβ€ŒThe Best Thing We Ate ⭐️

Canton On Roe

πŸ“ 20 Roe St, Northbridge WA 6003

You know food is gonna be good when you tell your Mum that you're going to a place for dim sum and she replies with "it's good".

Wrapping up last weekend we went to Canton On Roe for a friend's birthday - which explains for.. multiples of the same dish.

A table filled with bamboo steamers of xiao long bao (soup dumplings), neatly arranged in a restaurant setting.
Assorted dim sum

It was probably the most stand-out dim sum I've had over the past year in terms of quality. Everything we ordered was on point.

Apparently you can make bookings for larger groups. Not sure what the requirement is for this - but we were a group of around 12 people if that helps.

What We Ate 🍴

RoyAl's Chicken and Burgers

πŸ“ 834 Albany Hwy, East Victoria Park WA 6101

Long term readers will know I'm a bit of a watch nerd. Last Thursday I organised a watch meetup (we call them WGTG - watch-get-togethers) with the Perth chapter of a watch enthusiast and collecting group I'm part of.

Shout out to Al and the RoyAl's team for accommodating the group of us.

A loaded cheeseburger with crispy bacon, lettuce, and sauce, served with fries in a red basket.
Bougie Royal $24 - double beef, double cheese, mushroom duxelle, maple red onion relish, bacon, rocket & mayo

We've been to RoyAl's a couple of times over the years and have always enjoyed their burgs. The Bougie Royal was no exception. The mushroom duxelle added an injection of umami and texture into the burg. Rocket helped to tame some of the saltiness with addition of hints of bitterness.

Like banh mi, I think we're spoilt for choice regarding burgers. Most places will hit the mark and at the end of the day, it boils down to your personal preference.

If any readers here share the same obsession with ticking timepieces, shoot us a DM over on Pekopeko and I'll let you know more.

Also, random pro food photog tip: you can take a better shot of your burger by flipping the tray your burger comes with and then propping your burger up on it. #IYKYK

G'day Korean & Japanese Restaurant

πŸ“31 Moorhen Dr, Yangebup WA 6164

G'day Korean restaurant is located in the same complex as The GOGI KOREAN BBQ and has been on our list for some time.

Last Friday myself and some friends rocked up at around 6:30 pm - only to be met with a full house! A good problem to have for G'day and probably something we customers should be glad to see (usually a sign of a good restaurant).

A sizzling hot pot dish with stir-fried meat, vegetables, and chili peppers, served in a black cast iron dish.
Ossambulgogi (with rice) $24 - stir fried squid & pork / onion / carrot / cabbage / capsicum with spicy red chilli sauce

We waited around 30 mins for a table (we were told everyone had just been seated when we first arrived). Food took around 20-25 mins. Understandable given the backlog of food they probably had to cook through.

Food was great and we'd be back. Standout dishes was the ossambulgogi and the very hearty and full of umami, kalguksu.

A bowl of steaming ramen with thin noodles, a clear broth, and green garnish.
Kalguksu $18 - thick flour noodle / homemade soup / clams / zucchini / spring onion / kelp

The crowd seemed to die down around 7:30 pm, so we'd suggest visiting then.

Matcha Garden

πŸ“ 4/660 Albany Hwy, Victoria Park WA 6100

A cozy cafe interior with wooden tables, white chairs, and a blackboard wall featuring artistic chalk designs.

Matcha Garden opened up while we were on our honeymoon last year. I only got around to trying it with my groomsmen (coincidentally) over the weekend.

It was a little quiet on a Friday night during our visit 😬 though it was around an hour before closing.

The verdict? We enjoyed it. Our favourites in order were the matcha lava cake, hojicha tiramisu, matcha mont blanc and the matcha choux au craquelin.

A hand pouring a sauce over a matcha-flavored dessert, garnished with crushed nuts and powdered sugar.
Matcha lava cake $9.3 - rich lava cake blending matcha, served warm with creamy vanilla ice cream

The matcha lava cake gets the "not too sweet" accolade βœ…. It was well balanced with the earthy matcha syrup.

Frankly, if this was a little bigger, it'd probably give Nobu's lava cake a good run for its money (Nobu's lava cake running very much on the sweeter side).

A wooden masu box filled with a finely dusted matcha dessert, placed on a restaurant table.
Hojicha tiramisu $8.8 - hojicha soaked ladyfingers infused with hojicha, layered with rich mascarpone, served in a wooden container

The second fave was the hojicha tiramisu. The common theme of "not too sweet" pops up once again. It was light, but still had a nice roasted, hojicha flavour.

A matcha Mont Blanc tart with delicate green tea cream piped on top, garnished with a strawberry.
Matcha mont blanc tart $9.2 - matcha frangipane base, topped with smooth chestnut cream and a hint of matcha

The matcha mont blanc had a nice contrast of textures. Nice hints of matcha.

A matcha-infused cream puff dusted with powdered sugar, served on a black plate.
Matcha choux au craquelin $8.6 - delicate choux pastry filled with a rich matcha cream, topped with a crunchy craquelin

The least favourite for the night was the matcha choux au craquelin. I'm by no means a pastry chef, but the serving we got was a little soggy - perhaps from absorbing humidity when it sat in the fridge. No crunchiness.

Overall, we enjoyed our visit and would return back.Β₯

A low effort copy and paste + menu job.

Chicken On Charcoal Flame

πŸ“3/336 Spencer Rd, Thornlie WA 6108

Since our first visit last year, we're probably approaching ten to a dozen or so visits to Chicken On Charcoal Flame. Readers will know we're big fans of this place. Servings are generous and probably can be stretched across two meals, for smaller eaters.

Shout out to our friend Hamza for introducing Chicken On Charcoal Flame to us.

A Middle Eastern-inspired dish featuring grilled meat, flatbread, and a side of rice.
Lamb shawarma platter with salad $25

Paige's go-to is the lamb shawarma platter with salad. The lamb pairs very well with the side of hummus (lamb and hummus is actually a stand-alone dish here as well).

A plate of mixed grilled meats served with rice, pickled vegetables, and a side of hummus and onion dip.
Mixed platter $30 - spicy beef, lamb, chicken, prawns, cooked over charcoal & served with rice $30

For variety, I like the mixed platter. Love the range of proteins.
