Big Don's Smoked Meats

The best thing we ate this week was Big Don's Smoked Meats' BBQ platter which we shared between four of us in addition to a couple extras as well. From the nearly 2kg of meat, my favourite was the chicharron. We were luckily able to grab the second last serve of it!

Hand holding metal tray with assorted American BBQ meat, cornbread, mac and cheese, chicharron and sauces
BBQ share pack $135 (1.3kg meat)
BBQ Share Pack:
500g Wagyu Brisket
270g Nashville Chicken Cheddar Snag (mild)
270g Jalapeno Hot Gut Beef & Pork snag (mild)
200g Honey Pork Shoulder with fried rib tips
Elizas Honeybutter Cornbread
Cowboy Beans
4x flour tortillas
Southern Mustard
Fermented Pineapple Arbol salsa
Pickled veggies

Extras ordered:
300g Chicharron with Tomatillo Avo Salsa $23
300g Bacon Burnt Ends $20
Reaper Cheddar Snag $10 (HOT)
Black gloved hand cutting brisket

This marked the third time enjoying Big Don's BBQ share packs. We're hoping to try his Reubens next!

What We Ate 🍴

Nao Ramen

Both Paige and I have dined at Nao Ramen for over a decade. Our usual order being any of their ramen (typically their miso or shoyu). Last Friday was one of the rare occasions where I strayed away from ramen and got tsukumen instead (I can count on one hand the number of times I've had this at Nao Ramen).

Top down shot of plate with ramen noodles, spring onions, seaweed and chashu
Tsukumen dipping noodles (soy) with extra noodles and chashu $24.5

Tsukumen literally translates to "dipping noodles", where noodles are dipped into broth that is served on the side. The broth was damn hot enough to burn both our tongues! Tsukumen is a nice change - as it gives you a little more time to enjoy the noodles, and not worry about them getting "soggy" or soaking up all the broth.

Nao Ramen (Perth)
One of the OGs in the Perth ramen scene, serving up lighter broth variants of ramen and offering guests the ability to customise their bowl of ramen to their hearts desire.

Hitomebore

Bowl with assorted tempura
Hitome ten don $34 - anago, prawn, seasonal veg, onsen egg & nori

To round out our smaller than usual week of eating, we have Hitomebore (previously Kukan Izakaya). They're probably one of the few places in Perth where you can get tendon, with ten referring to tempura, rather than the high protein and fairly nutritious, tendon. Lots of variety in a bowl!

We'll be writing an article on Hitomebore to support our friends at Hitomebore, so stay tuned!
