WEEKLY DIGEST 099 | 29 MAR 2024
Udon and sides at Hifumiya

This past is week is what I'd call "a week of lazy eating", where we barely travel further than a couple kilometres from home for food.

After lunch at Hifumiya on Saturday, we made a loop through the Perth Japan Festival then made our way back. Weather was nice, but boy was it warm (you can tell that we loove the cold)!

This long weekend we've got visits to Spencer Village and Canteen Pizza planned. Let's see what else we get up to.

Hoping everyone has a safe and delicious Easter long weekend!

P.S. Part 2 of our Japan travel post will be out over the long weekend. Drafting has begun 🫑

This week we ate

β€Œβ€ŒThe Best Thing We Ate ⭐️

Uncle Eddie

The last time I visited Uncle Eddie was when he operated out of Anything La's kitchen. Since then, he's acquired the space that previously was occupied by Little Nyonya Kitchen.

Char mee $16.9 - local King Prawns, savoury sausage, pork lard, crisp bean sprouts, chilli and chive $19.9

The char mee (better known was mee goreng), was the star of the show. The duck egg added a delicious richness to the dish.

What We Ate 🍴

Cake by Cake

Oreo bingsu $17.9

Following dinner at Uncle Eddie, a couple friends and I droppde into Cake by Cake. This small Korean cafe has been around for at least a year or two now. It was my first time dropping in.

Top down shot of matcha latte in a glass with a heart latte art
Malcha latte $5.9

For those in the Murdoch area, we're pretty spoilt for Korean style dessert cafes - Brown Spoon, Cafe Momo, Cake by Cake and you could even consider Jinny & Co's bingsu offering too.

Basque cheese cake $10.9

Overall, everything was great. The bingsu was powdery and gets the classic praise of "not too sweet". We might've made the mistake of ordering a slice of the very rich tiramisu cake in addition to the already rich basque cheese cake.

On Cake by Cake's menu are a number of savoury items too.

Hifumiya

Don't forget to grab the sides at Hifumiya

Hifumiya's pork kimchi udon is one of those dishes that is enough for.. Paige and I to commit a faux pas.

The foodie faux pas of "both ordering the same thing" πŸ˜‚ (Rossonero's The King is also on this list).

Pork kimchi bukkake $17.8 (L)

Onto our bowl of udon. It was as good as always! The only nitpick was.. There still was a line at 2 pm πŸ₯²! A great problem for the team at Hifumiya to have. Luckily, the line at Hifumiya moves very quickly and it didn't take too long to be seated with our food.

Golden BBQ Seafood Restaurant

Rounding up the list this week is Golden BBQ Seafood Restaurant. Golden BBQ Seafood Restaurant has been in Canning Vale for.. at least 10+ years. Probably more. They're probably best known for their Cantonese roast meats and Cantonese dishes, until recently, as they've started doing dim sum.

Zhaliang - price unknown (didn't see which box the dim sum lady ticked on our order sheet πŸ˜…)

The quality of the dim sum we had was pretty good and my incredibly hard to please hospo parents seemed to think it was passable too.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to try any of the sweet treats I'd normally get at dim sum (wasn't too keen to inhale three char siew bao or pineapple buns myself), but I'm sure they should be decent. Or at least, rank reasonably well on my "closeness to deliciousness ratio".
