WEEKLY DIGEST | FEB 22
This week we have a mini banh mi guide. The best thing we ate this week was Kai Bento at Kai.
Weekly Digest is our weekly newsletter where we revisit what we ate over the past week.
Firstly, a quick site update
This week, we crossed off something we've been wanting to get sorted on this site for a long time... We finally got Google Analytics up and running β
. If we had realised how easy it is to install, we would've installed it much earlier on! We're looking forward to tracking, optimising and growing the site as we go along π.
This might the lengthiest newsletter so far. Towards the end of this, you'll also find our first "mini guide", on banh mi (north of the river).
We hope you enjoy reading these as much as we enjoy writing them. We find writing longer form content hits different compared to writing shorter Instagram posts.
This week we have:
π± Kai Japanese
π₯ De Honey Charcoal Grilled
π«π· Praline
π Ciao Italia Express
π₯ BMT Vietnamese Meat Rolls
π»π³ Nhu Loan
π₯ MCQ Vietnamese Rolls
π§ Boba Boba

π¨ Announcement π¨
Kukan Izakaya re-opening
Last year, our friends at Kukan Izakaya were awakened in middle of the night to news that a fire had broken out in their restaurant. This caused major damage in the restaurant and happened only a short time after the big investment to move and renovate to a new store.
Luckily, no one was hurt and a GoFundMe page was set up, allowing Chef-Owner Evan, a new father at the time, to minimise the financial impact.
It's been around six months since the incident and we were elated to hear that Kukan Izakaya will be re-opening this Wednesday 23 Feb 2022 π.
Kukan Izakaya ranks as one of our favourite modern Japanese restaurants in Perth. The menu can be thought of modern Japanese food meets Nobu meets Korean. Be sure to check-out our posts on Kukan Izakaya over the next week.
We're looking forward to visiting soon!
Bookings can be made here.
Some of our favourite dishes on their menu include their duck breast and the spinach miso salad. Their miso creme brulee was one of the best things we ate in all of 2019 - the year they first opened.
βοΈ The Best Thing We Ate
Kai Japanese
We've been regulars of Kai for over 10+ years. Our go-to order is their Japanese curry or Kai Bento.
We both got the Kai bento. Priced at around $23, it offers tremendous value given the spread and amount of food in the bento. This bento satisfies all of our Japanese cravings at once.
The only thing we think is missing with the bento is the addition some sort of sauce with the karaage, like kewpie mayonnaise (note their regular servings of karaage come with a delicious spicy mayo).
Kai is a very small restaurant. It wouldn't be a lie to say your bathroom at home is probably bigger than Kai's dining area. Best dine in early or towards closing time, or alternatively order for take-away.
π΄ What We Ate
Praline Patisserie
We visited Praline for a quick lunch with a friend.
The crepe benedicte was enjoyable but our favourite crepe at Praline would still be the complete crepe breakfast which we had last month.
Ciao Italia
We picked up Ciao Italia takeaway for a lazy night in last week with some friends. To this day, they serve up our favourite chilli mussels.
Pictured:
π¦ Spaghetti Neri Alla Selerno $22.5 - prawns in tomato chilli basil sauce
π Ciao Italia Fettuccini $20
π¦ͺ Cozze Pescatoria $26.5
π€ Chilli Prawn $24.5 - prawns, roasted capsicum, fresh tomato, chilli & onion
πCalabrese $24.5 - mild Italian sausage, onion, roasted capsicum, diced tomato & chilli
Ciao Italia's tiramisu is a must order as well!
De Honey Charcoal Grilled
We were invited to check out De Honey's new stall, ahead of their official launch last Saturday. Congrats to the team on the move!
Boba & Banh Mi - A Mini Guide to Banh Mi (North of the River)
I (Eddy) spent my Sunday hitting up a number of banh mi joints in the northern suburbs of Perth with fellow foodie friend @chefvinnien.
Our start location was Marangaroo Shopping Centre. In all of Perth, it probably has the highest density of Vietnamese eateries within a 100m radius π.
The first banh mi of the day was at BMT Vietnamese Bread Rolls.
The star of the show was the nuoc mia (sugar cane juice).
The next place was only a stone throw away, Nhu Loan.
We appreciated the small dine in area given it was a fairly warm day.
Our last stop was at MCQ Vietnamese Rolls in Mirrabooka.
The grilled pork banh mi was my personal favourite out of all the rolls we shared. The pork was marinated in a similar way to the pork found in com tam (Vietnamese broken rice).
We washed everything down with a serve of their Vietnamese iced coffee. It was deliciously "not too sweet" and was perfect for a hot day.
To finish up, we swung by @bobaboba_au for refreshments. Their iced houjicha latte is our pick (thanks to @brb.bbt for the recommendation).
That wraps up Boba & Banh Mi. If there's interest in it, we're happy to write up a banh mi guide here on the website!
