WEEKLY DIGEST | JUL 05
We're back from Melbourne and Sydney! We show off a couple cool things in Melbourne - exhibitions at ACMI and LIGHTSCAPE.
Weekly Digest is our weekly newsletter where we revisit what we ate over the past week.
We're back from our trip to Melbourne and Sydney. It's felt great having some time away from blogging and Instagram, and our website performance hasn't really dropped that much either which is really nice!
We cover a little bit on what we got up to and a couple things you can do in Melbourne. Keep your eyes peeled as we'll be posting more from Melbourne and Sydney over the next couple of weeks.
This week we have:
Lode Pies
Arata Japanese Dining
Common Bakery

Melbourne - ACMI
We spent an arvo at ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image).
The Story of the Moving Image (free exhibition) and Light: Works from Tate's Collection (ticketed - around $30) were awesome exhibitions.
The Story of the Moving Image appears to be a long standing / permanent exhibition while Light: Works from Tate's Collection is on until the 2nd week of November 2022.
For more info, check out the ACMI exhibitions page.
Melbourne - LIGHTSCAPE
We spent our last night in Melbourne at LIGHTSCAPE, which was held at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. Tickets were around $40 from memory and we thought this offered tremendous value, compared to Van Gogh Alive in Perth.
It is a 2km light trail and we spent around 90 minutes there. The vibe was awesome - it felt like we were in a theme park!
LIGHTSCAPE is on until early August 2022. Find out more about LIGHTSCAPE here.
I'll be starting to upload more snaps from ACMI and LIGHTSCAPE on my photography account - which is an outlet for my non-food related photography. Check it out here if interested.
Sydney
The tail end of our trip was in Sydney. We spent most of it hanging out with friends and eating, of course!
I was fortunate enough to help out at a shoot with Kera (@kerabeareats) - a photographer whose work I've admired and followed for years and her assistant, Alex (@lanlan_eats). It's left me inspired to shoot - especially more with flashes as opposed to continuous lights, which I'm used to using.
You can check out Kera's work here and Alex's work here.
The Best Thing We Ate โญ๏ธ
Unequivocally, the best thing we ate last week was the LuMi Pithivier from Lode Pies while we were in Sydney.
We didn't know until after our visit (a.k.a. now, having done a bit of research) that Lode Pies is run by LuMi chef Federico Zanellato (head chef at LuMi Dining*) and Chef Lorenzo Librino (LuMi Dining, Momofuku Seiobo and Tetsuyas). This explains the pastry mastery coming out of this bakery.
*LuMi Dining is a casual fine dining Italian-Japanese restaurant exclusively offering a tasting menu (occupying where David Chang's Momofuku Seiobo once was).
Look at those beautiful layers!
Arata Japanese Dining
Arata is a new Japanese restaurant opened by an ex-chef of Hifumiya, Perth's first udon noodle house. Differentiating Arata with other Japanese restaurants is their focus on yoshoku (Japanese western-influenced cooking), the type of food you can commonly find at family style restaurants in Japan.
Corn and mayo is a popular pizza topping in Japan.
Common Bakery
We popped into Common Bakery on Saturday morning for a quick coffee and a delicious Nutella croffin. Common Bakery is run by the same folks behind Freo's Bread in Common.
